It’s almost time to thank the ones who started it all!! Your grandparents! Grandparents day is Sept. 12, 2010. If you are a parent then you have a big task on your hands of deciding how your kids will show their appreciation for their grandparents this year. Grandparents are such an important part of a family unit. They offer comfort, advice, old time stories, babysitting, great family recipes and more! Grandparents are great people to ask for advice, since they have been through the trial and errors of life already, and should have a reasonable and understandable answer for you. So, to help you decide what gifts or crafts you should give to them this year to show your appreciation for all they do, here are a few suggestions.
If your grandparents are like mine, (you know the ones who walked 20 mi. to school in ten feet of snow uphill barefoot!), then you should create your own story for them! A great make at home gift for them this Grandparents Daywould be a story book written by, you! You can use one of your favorite memories of time spent with your grandparents for inspiration. You know, that trip to the zoo, that picnic in the park, or that afternoon you made cookies together. Staple a few pages of construction paper together, write your story, and draw pictures or glue family pictures for illustrations. This will become a memory book that will keep them thinking of the special times you have spent together. Add a book each year and see how many good memories you have to last a life time!
You will find that your grandparents are at the age where they enjoy the simpler things in life more than the fancy shmancy items in stores. For me, simple means homemade! Go for a nature walk and collect leaves, flowers, pebbles, and other nature items. Take them home and turn them into a beautiful masterpiece starring you! Place a picture of you in the middle of sturdy paper. Start adding your items from your nature walk around your picture and decorate until your hearts content. Finish it off with a simple note on the back to your grandparents. You can place inside a window box picture frame to help protect your masterpiece. Your Nana’s and Papa’s are going to love it and will hang it up for all their friends to see! For more sentiment you can add photos of you with your grandparents and make a collage of memories!
Grandparents are also great at boasting about how beautiful/handsome and smart their grandchildren are. So why not write them an acrostic poem boasting how happy you are to have awesome grandparents like them. Use the letters in G-R-A-N-D-M-A or G-R-A-N-D-P-A and write a descriptive phrase for each letter. Use a long piece of paper, write the letters vertically and add your phrase that starts with each letter. Place in a frame and you have a great gift for Grandparents Daythat they can hang on their wall to enjoy for years to come!
You can also give them a gift that keeps on giving, long after the celebration is over. With an infant in the house, I have been going through my fair share of formula cans. I have been saving them up for a craft project and think that this will be a perfect opportunity to use some of them up. My plan is to paint the outside of the cans with a white spray paint and then let my kids paint the outside for a personal touch. Make 6-8 holes in the bottom of the can with a large nail and hammer. Fill with potting soil and plant a flowering plant for Grandma’s and a foliage/greenery for Grandpa’s in the container. Then you have a personalized flower pot to give as a gift this Grandparents Day! You can bet they won’t be disappointed!
Grandparents day, is a great opportunity to show them how much you care and appreciate all they do for you. But remember, to also show your appreciation all year round! Just use Grandparents Day as a time to show a little extra appreciation for them! They deserve it!
