Just the day before People magazine announced that Ryan Reynolds was their 2010 “Sexiest Man Alive,”Warner Brothers released the movie trailer for “Green Lantern.” Reynolds stars in the action-packed movie, which is based on the DC Comics superhero of the same name. Although the movie is slated to be released in the summer of 2011, a good promotion campaign begins months in advance, but it is highly doubtful that the “Green Lantern” trailer’s release the day before the “Sexiest Man Alive” unveiling is coincidental. The universe simply will allow only so much serendipity, and Ryan Reynolds certainly has seen a few things break his way in the last five years.
Having an affinity for comic books and their heroes hasn’t hurt his career. Ryan Reynolds jumped at the chance to work alongside People magazine’s 2008 “Sexiest Man Alive,” Hugh Jackman, in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” as Deadpool, a role he is said to be reprising at a later date in a movie dedicated to that particular Marvel Comics character. He was soon cast as Hal Jordan in Warner Brothers adaptation of the Green Lantern comic book hero.
Although some got a glimpse of the upcoming “Green Lantern” movie at Comic Con 2010 in San Diego (and a few more have seen bootleg trailers online), Tuesday’s release is the first official trailer released to the public.
The viewer is pulled into the movie trailer as Hal Jordan rushes to get to work. He’s a test pilot whose plane goes down and is a subsequent witness to an extraterrestrial spacecraft crash. A dying alien bestows upon the heretofore irresponsible and reckless Jordan a ring. Holding the ring makes him a member of a group of guardians, green lantern protectors of the universe. The wielders of the rings control a power that is limited only by the user’s imagination and willpower.
Hal Jordan is the first human ever chosen to hold a green lantern ring, according to Yahoo! Movies. He finds himself exploring and learning about his new powers at the same time that a threat to the balance of power in the universe asserts itself. As Parallax grows stronger, Jordan struggles to become accepted as part of the green lantern brotherhood, showing the others that what they’ve always needed is a little humanity.
Although the general storyline is lost in the first trailer, setting Hal Jordan up as heir to powers of the ring seems to be the intent. That there is something menacing in the universe is shown as well. Why the audience is supposed to care is not clear.
Perhaps a couple more trailers will shine a light on this void.
Ryan Reynolds will be in the middle of his reign as Sexiest Man Alive when the movie premieres in June.
