“Greetings!” to Benefit the HIV Care Center of Pensacola, Florida

by bogbit

Ready or not, the holidays are here! If you’re having a hard time getting into the holiday spirit, Pensacola’s Sanctuary in the Groves – Theatre West has just the thing: Greetings! an award-winning show written by Tom Dudzick. In the spirit of giving, Sanctuary in the Groves – Theatre West has added a special holiday performance on Sunday, December 12, 7:00 p.m. supporting the HIV Care Center’s Needy Meds Program which obtains and monitors crucial medications for patients in the community.

“Greetings” is an award-winning show described as a comic jewel, stunning and touching. New York Newsday said, “It brings a joyful holiday lift to those who like to believe in miracles.”

Dudzick’s story is set in the home of the Gorski family as they gather for Christmas. Phil and Emily Gorski are an old-fashioned couple. Phil is deeply religious and patriotic. Emily is the perfect bubbly housewife. They are the proud parents of two sons: Andy, a career man who has moved to New York; and Mickey, a mentally handicapped adult who lives at home.

Andy brings his Jewish, atheist fiancĂ©e, Randi, home for Christmas, stirring up controversy and arguments. Andy’s New York life and choice of wife aren’t in line with family politics and when Andy’s father, Phil, discovers Randi is an atheist, discussions about science, belief systems, and the meaning of life set sparks flying. Just as Andy and Randi are ready to walk out on the Gorski family Christmas celebration, something haunting happens; Mickey says, “Greetings!” Until this time, Mickey’s vocabulary consisted of “wow” and “oh boy” and single syllable sounds. The family is shocked and Mickey has much more to say. Mickey’s holiday miracle propels the family into a wild exploration of love, religion and truth.

Sanctuary in the Groves – Theatre West’s Sunday evening performance will benefit and support the HIV Care Center’s mission to provide quality state-of-the-art medical care, psychosocial services, and comprehensive education to HIV-infected individuals in Northwest Florida. The HIV Care Center operates in conjunction with the medical practice founded by Dr. Barbara Wade that currently provides HIV/AIDS care in an underserved area. The HIV Care Center provides Ryan White medical care to uninsured HIV+ patients and provides free care to uninsured patients with HIV/AIDS who require hospitalization.
