It is that time of year as the autumn wind starts to blow all the fall festivals and arts and crafts shows start up. Many are based on the large Oktoberfest festival in Germany. Their annual Oktoberfest in Bavaria takes place in late October, not long before Halloween, it is so popular it attracts about 6 million people every year. In the fall, cities all over the world have their own Oktoberfest celebrations. Most have evolved into fun festivals with food and attractions for the entire family to enjoy. Here are some of the best local Oktoberfest celebrations in and around the Houston area.

September 24th-26th this popular Oktoberfest will take place in Town Green Park in The Woodlands, just about 20 minutes north of downtown Houston. The festival is along the waterway next to the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. Parking for the event is free and within walking distance to the festival. There are no pets allowed on the fairgrounds. Admission is free for children ten and under, ten and up the cost is $10.00. You can purchase tickets online here at their Oktoberfest Website, or at the gates. The hours are Friday September 24th from 5 to 9 p.m., Saturday 12 to 9, and Sunday 12 to 6.
To kick off the celebration they will have an opening keg tapping ceremony Friday September the 24th at 6 p.m. They will have a German stage and a Euro stage with live music performances all weekend. They will have arts and crafts booths, food vendors and many fun activities for children. You can enjoy all American food like BBQ, funnel cakes and Cajun sausage, or try some authentic German cuisine. They will have: bratwurst & sauerkraut. Fresh baked German strudel, German pretzels, chocolate bon-bon’s and much more. Not only can you and your family enjoy all the fun but all the proceeds go directly to The Woodlands Rotary Club Foundation. This foundation is responsible for giving out almost $1,000,000 in scholarships to students in its 34 years of service.
29th Annual Galveston Island Oktoberfest

This all free admission Oktoberfest is holding its 29th annual celebration on Friday October the 22nd and Saturday October the 23rd. Historic downtown Galveston Island will alive with food and fun starting on Friday from 5 to 11 p.m., and then on Saturday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. You will be treated to live music, including the famous German band Alpenfest and Haywire one of Austin’s favorite country and western contemporary groups. The church will be packed with a wide variety of arts and crafts booths, the perfect chance to get a jump on your holiday and Christmas shopping. This is the perfect way to spend a weekend of fun with your family, especially since admission is free.
You will be able to sample authentic German foods like: red cabbage, knackwurst, sauerkraut, strudel, popcorn, hand-made pretzels and a variety of German beers and soft drinks. The Oktoberfest will have tons of fun activities to keep your children happy. They will have water balloons, pony rides, a moon walk, rock wall, petting zoo, face painting and so much more. There is even fun for the adults including games, auctions and raffles to win prizes. The perfect way to celebrate a fall weekend with family and friends, and Galveston is only a 40 minute to hour drive from Houston, depending on the traffic.
