So I am sure that you have heard by now that Twitter was hacked yesterday.
According to this article – http://sify.com/news/twitter-hack-sends-users-to-hardcore-porn-sites-news-international-kjwoOcdiejf.html, all you had to do was visit Twitter via the Internet (www.twitter.com) and it was enough to initiate the bug and continue sending it out. Simple as that.
When the hack was first discovered however, they though that you needed to either click the link or hover over the link that was tweeted out to you to activate it. They soon found this wasn’t the case, that is was automatic, and were actually telling its Twitter users to stay away from their website until they could figure out what was going on. If you absolutely couldn’t stay away from Twitter (and who can just stay away from Twitter?) they suggested that you use a third party application, such as the ones you use on your smart phone.
The problem seemed to be repaired rather quickly, and operations were restored to the Twitter world before noon EST. I didn’t realize what was going on right away when I got onto Twitter, so I did re-tweet a couple things before I caught on that the world o’ twitter was slightly dead. All of the posts were coming from third party sources and a lot of people were just avoiding Twitter completely. At least they were following directions! I would be interested in seeing a breakdown of how many people did not utilize the micro-blogging site yesterday morning compared to a regular Tuesday morning. If someone comes across this information – please pass it on to me!
The coolest part of this hack (if there can be a cool part)? Twitter knows who did it, a young man from Australia, and they aren’t pressing charges. That is extremely noble of them, and something I can respect as well. Good job handling this mess Twitter.
Have a good Wednesday!
