Every year my children and I Trick or Treat with my niece Haley. Trick or Treating with family has been a long time tradition for both of us so when we moved into same neighborhood it was automatic that we would Trick or Treat together with our families. Each year my niece Haley does something that makes us all laugh. It is not her costume or makeup. It is something different that she does or says each year that makes each Halloween memorable and gives us another story to tell about Haley’s Halloween antics.
A few years ago, when the antics began, we were all out trick or treating when an elderly woman came to the door. She had a basket full of apples and homemade cookies in baggies. Both things we had spent time warning our girls about the danger of eating. Never eat anything unwrapped, never eat anything home made. We should get everything home first and check it before eating – especially things that are not store packaged. Upon presenting the basket, my daughter Lauren proceeds to take a bag with the cookies and place it in her bag. My niece Haley takes an apple and says “look mom, an apple” and takes a bite. Her parents and I all screamed. I don’t think that any of us could believe that Haley had actually tried to take a bit of the apple.
That was story number one. The following year, on what I believe to be the same block as the house with the apples and cookies, we came to a house with a very friendly gentleman sitting outside waiting for the children to come. The girls bound up the stairs and the man holds out his bowl of treats and says “take two”. My daughter proceeds to take two candies from the bowl while Haley turns toward us and says, “Mom, what do I do, he has nothing in the bowl that I like”. Upon hearing this the man offers to go inside to find something else for Haley. Her very embarrassed mom quickly tells the man not to do that and we move on.
That was story number 2. The third year happened to be the year of the presidential election of Obama vs McCain. After a while of trick or treating and seeing many Obama signs in our neighborhood we see a lawn sign supporting McCain/Palin. Again, the girls bound up the stairs, ring the bell and chant “trick or treat”. The home owner produces the basket of treats and as Haley thanks the treat giver she says to the lady “so nice to see someone supporting McCain around here”. We all just laughed. That was story number 3.
We are all looking forward to trick or treating this year and wondering what funny, silly thing Haley will do to make us all laugh a little harder this year.
