When thinking of the typical adult female a Halloween costume pregnancy surely does not fit into them, literally. This leaves many moms-to-be finding creative ways to accessorize their baby bellies by painting them to look like basket balls, fish tanks, watermelons and even crystal balls however not all moms live in areas where Halloween and trick or treating are a warm event. Being a mother from Alaska painting my skin and going bare belly was not really an option unless I wanted a Popsicle child that is. As a result I spent a great deal of time brain storming costume ideas for pregnant women that did not include belly painting.
Here are my top five favorite and some ideas for maternity costumes right along the same lines.
1. Mother Earth
Often called Gaia, the Mother Goddess, or earth goddess this mythological figure is almost always depicted pregnant. While you could paint your belly like the globe for this costume you could also simply dress “earthy” so to speak with Greek robes and leaves, plants, elf/nymph like costume attire.
2. Mary Mother of Jesus
This makes a great couples option as there’s a pretty obvious companion costume to this choice. Mary costumes also allow pregnant women to wear warm clothing under their robes to avoid freezing their bellies off. Some great alternatives in this same thought cloud include nun, angel, catholic school girl, Mormon missionary, a man or an ancient old lady. The first being a worldwide recognized pregnant figure, the later religious figures and other individuals that generally would not be pregnant.
Any figure well known for having a jolly belly works well Santa is just one of the most well known. You can also consider Buddha, sumo wrestler, Fred Flintstone, Fat Albert, Juno, Homer Simpson or Peter Griffin.
4. A baby
Toddlers in particular often have pot-bellies this makes baby or toddler a pretty plausible Halloween costume for pregnant women. You could also play on the pregnancy topic dressing as an oven , loaf of bread, or a woman in labor.
5. Pregnant Zombie
I included this because well, I love zombies. You could give this costume added flare by keeping a zombie baby recording in your pocket as I think a pregnant zombie would have an undead loud baby. Pregnant mummy would also work. Bella from Twilight as a pregnant vampire is also a nice variation though it may need some explanation.
All of the above could easily been done with nice comfortable and warm clothing on, plus they attract less people to touch your belly.
