Discover the secrets of making a great homemade mummy costume that will scare anyone. There is not really very much to it, just follow these simple instructions and you will be the envy of every other mummy walking around on Halloween.
You will need the following items;
- tea bags
- long sleeve polo shirt
- tights or thermal pant
Try to get the gauze at a fabric store instead of the small packages. By doing this you will save a great deal of money. For a person who stands six feet tall you will need about eight yards of gauze.
Take the tea bags and make a large pot of tea. After it cools, gently place about half of the gauze inside to dye it. This will give your mummy costume the old weathered look, that every great mummy needs. You do not need to let the gauze soak for long at all in fact just dipping it in the tea and taking it out will work just fine.
Once the gauze is dry you can begin getting your costume on. You need to start by putting on a long sleeved white or beige top with no collar. White or off -white thermal pants or tights should be worn for the bottoms. The gauze is see through and the tea on the gauze will dye your skin if it stays on for very long, this is the reason for the clothes underneath.Now comes the fun part, wrapping. You do need to wrap each leg individually, for easy access to a bathroom when needed. The parts that cannot be wrapped can be glued onto the clothing. Next is the upper body, wrap some of the dyed gauze mixed with the white gauze around the entire body. Having some white and some dyed gauze adds to the effect of a real mummy. Move to the arms and do the same, remember if you hold your arms out totally straight when you are wrapping you will not be able to bend them later without separating the gauze. If you bend your arms slightly while wrapping you will use more gauze but you will also be more comfortable.
