This Halloween Table Runner with fabric yo-yos is quick and easy to sew for your Halloween decorating. It’s a great sewing project for beginners. The fabric yo-yos add a fun retro touch. I made this table runner for practical reasons. I have an antique cherry table that I need to protect from scratches. This Halloween Table Runner with fabric yo-yos will add to my holiday decorations and protect my table.
Materials Needed To Make The Halloween Table Runner with Fabric Yo-Yos:
Sewing The Halloween Table Runner with Fabric Yo-Yos:
Measure and cut the holiday fabric of your choice to the size you need for your table. Add an inch all the way around to hem the raw edges. I cut my table runner 16 x 45 inches. To finish the edges of the table runner, fold the long edges under a quarter of an inch and iron. Turn under three-quarters of an inch for hem. Iron and stitch with a straight stitch on your sewing machine. Do the same on both ends of the table runner. This will give you a nice hem on all edges.
Cut large rickrack to the width of the table runner. Pin to the right side of fabric at each end. Wrap raw ends of rickrack to the backside. Sew down the middle of the rickrack to attach.
Next, make your fabric yo-yos out of 3 – 4 different coordinating Halloween fabrics. To make the yo-yos you’ll need a needle, thread, scissors, pencil, and lightweight cardboard. Cut a 4.5 inch circle out of the cardboard. Your pattern should be about twice the size of the finished fabric yo-yos.
Lay the cardboard pattern on the wrong side of your fabric. Trace around it with a pencil. Cut out the fabric circle. Fold the raw edge of your fabric circle under one-eighth inch and iron. Stitch around the fabric circle with a basting stitch. Keep the stitches close to the fold. (A basting stitch is a long length stitch that can be gathered.) Once you’ve gone around the fabric circle, pull the thread gently to gather. Take the thread through the fabric yo-yo to the back side and sew a few stitches to secure. Your yo-yo is done!
You can make as many yo-yos as you’d like to decorate the Halloween table runner. Lay them out until you are pleased with the look. Pin and hand sew them to the table runner.
To save time I use Clover’s Quick Yo-Yo Maker. This is a plastic disc template that you can find at www.clover-usa.com for a reasonable price.
Enjoy sewing and decorating with your Halloween Table Runner with fabric yo-yos!
