Zelda’s Book of Spells & Potions is an easy, cheap Halloween craft project for you to make. You probably won’t even have to buy anything to make it. The materials needed are items that most crafters will have on hand. Zelda’s Book is a spooktacular Halloween craft project that makes a fun holiday decoration or gift. It will hold your hidden treasures or some Halloween candy.
Materials Needed To Make This Halloween Craft Project
Old hardcover book
Small piece of painters’ canvas or any heavy material (jeans could work)
Orange and Black Acrylic Paint
#10 Round Brush
Liner brush or Sharpie pen
Sponge brush or Flat brush
Cotton material to cover inside of book box
Ripped rag, ribbon or raffia
Halloween Craft Project Step #1 – Forming The Book Into A Box
Form the book into a box by cutting each page along the print line leaving the plain paper at the borders. Make a slit in the middle of each page and cut right along the edge of the print. Cut through 5-6 pages at one time to make the cutting go faster. The thicker the book, the deeper the box will be.
When all the pages have been cut, it is time to glue. Using white glue, start at the back of the book. Glue the last page to the book’s back cover. Glue each page down until all pages are glued. The “box” inside of the book has been formed. Let dry thoroughly.
Halloween Craft Project Step #2 – Covering Embossed Titles
If your hardcover book has an embossed title on its spine that the paint won’t cover, cut a piece of painters’ canvas (or any heavy material) the size of the spine. Glue it over the title.
Halloween Craft Project Step #3 – Painting Zelda’s Book of Spells & Potions
Paint the book’s covers with orange acrylic paint. Let dry.
Using a #10 round brush paint the witch image with black acrylic paint. Paint the title with a liner brush or you can use a Sharpie pen.
Use black acrylic paint to ‘antique’ the book covers and the edge of the box.
Halloween Craft Project Step #4 – Witch Pattern
The Halloween witch with cauldron stencil painted on the book’s cover is a free pumpkin carving stencil found at www.celebrating-halloween.com. Lettering for the title can be done on a word processor or handprinted. Transfer the witch pattern and title to the book cover using graphite paper.
Halloween Craft Project Step #5 – Finishing Zelda’s Book of Spells & Potions
Finish the inside of the box with cotton material. Glue in place, mitering the corners.
Glue on a bow made of Halloween print ribbon or ripped rag.
Fill your Zelda’s Book of Spells & Potions with some Halloween candy and enjoy! This Halloween craft project will put a smile on the faces of all your trick-or-treaters and guests.
