Halloween Crafts: Jack-O-Lantern Charger Plates

by bogbit

If you are looking for a classy way to dress up your Halloween dinner party table, these fun and chic jack-o-lantern charger plates are a superb project idea! Create a set to use on your table or to fill with baked goods for giving.

For this project, you will need (per charger plate):

– One clear glass charger plate
– Mild dish detergent
– Water
– Paper towels
– Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Gloss Black
– Orange scrapbook paper
– Black scrapbook paper
– Green scrapbook paper
– Pencil
– Jack-o-lantern shaped stencil
– Craft knife
– Self healing mat
– Elmer’s glue stick
– Sponge brush
– Mod Podge or other decoupage medium
– Small craft roller
– Newsprint and/or a large drop cloth

Before starting, cover your work area with several sheets of old newsprint and/or a large drop cloth. Wash the clear glass charger plate using a mild dish detergent. Rinse the plate well with water. Dry the outside of the plate using paper towels. Let the charger plate set for a little while to continue air drying.

Place the orange print scrapbook paper onto the self healing mat. In pencil, trace the jack-o-lantern design onto the paper in pencil. Cut out the jack-o-lantern shape using a craft knife. Trace two triangle shapes for eyes and a jack-o-lantern smile for the mouth onto the black paper. Cut out these designs as well. Finally, create a green stem shape onto the green scrapbook paper. Cut out the stem shape. Apply the eyes, mouth, and stem onto the orange jack-o-lantern shape with a bit of Elmer’s glue stick. Dry completely.

Place the clear glass charger plate upside down on the work area. Apply a generous amount of Mod Podge or other decoupage medium to the front of the paper jack-o-lantern piece. Adhere the jack-o-lantern design face down on the center of the bottom of the charger plate. (This will allow the design to show through the clear glass.) Smooth the paper piece using a small craft roller. Wipe away any excess glue from the plate using a damp paper towel. Let the glue dry completely.

Spray the bottom of the charger plate with five to seven thick coats of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Gloss Black. Let the charger plate dry overnight before enjoying.

TIP: This project is hand wash only once completed. Also, if you wish to add other details such as lettering, create paper cutouts and glue them on as done during the jack-o-lantern decoupage step.
