A pumpkin carving contest is a fun game to play at any Halloween party. A fun variation of this Halloween party game is to have the contestants battle the clock as well as one another.
Place a table in an area where all the guests have room to crowd around and see the spectacle. Cover the table and floor with plastic or newspaper. Next, place a pumpkin and carving utensils at each station. Place the guests names into a bucket and draw one name for each available seat.
Have everyone gather around the table, and show the carvers to their seats. Now explain to each contestant that they will have just so much time to complete the carvings (I like to use ten minutes for a kids table and five minutes for the adults). Have the crowd count down and let the fun begin.
Announce how much time is remaining throughout the duration of the competition. Four minutes, Three minutes, Two minutes, One minute, 30 seconds, ten seconds, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, STOP.
At this point, allow each person a couple seconds to clean the outside of their pumpkin with paper towels and then have the contestants set their pumpkins in a display area.
Place a tea light inside each of the pumpkins and allow the crowd time to examine the different carvings.
At this point it is fun to give each guest four tickets. have the guests place one ticket in a container next to each of their favorite carvings. I find it best to give the guests about an hour to place their tickets. This takes the pressure off of them and allows them to distribute their tickets without the pressure of having everyone watching them.
Announce to the guests when they have about five minutes left to vote for their favorite pumpkins. After the time is up and you are ready to count the tickets, use a marker to write “1” on the first pumpkin and container, “2” on the second pumpkin and container, and so on until all are marked. Take the containers to the side and count up the tickets.
Once the counting is done, announce the winning pumpkin and ask the carver to step up to receive their prize. Give this person a Halloween crown or scepter and give them the title of the “Pumpkin King for the rest of the party”.
The party continues:
For the remainder of the Halloween party, Ask the Pumpkin king to either host the rest of the games or to name another host of their choice. In the event of a tie, the Pumpkin King decides the who the winner is.
Another fun way to vote on the winners is to make the four tickets different colors and write categories on each of the four tickets. Doing this will allow guests to vote on the scariest, funniest, most original, and pumpkin king categories.
Have fun with this Halloween party game and change it to suit your party. The guests will love this game.
