Halo Reach: Solo Legendary Campaign Guide
The Pillar of Autumn (10th mission)
(A few notes, before the guide:
1) I am not claiming this guide is the easiest way to complete this mission. I’m simply offering advice, strategies, routes, and locations to those interested or struggling, with the hopes that this will help them complete the level
2) I will have a video of this on my Youtube account with a few days’ time of this being published. Please check out my channel (www.youtube.com/compohsed) if you’re lazy and don’t want to read, or want a visual of what I’m talking about. The video will be commentated over with similar information to what I provide here)
You’ll start up on the top of a cliff. Toss your grenade and slowly fire off your pistol to kill the first zealot on the right side as the first move. Rule of thumb is to keep your distance (stay on the cliff for the first zealot kill), as less shots will hit you, and there’s more cover. Once you’ve killed the first zealot, pick up a plasma pistol (usually one dropped by a grunt when you toss the nade at the zealot) and use that to kill the other elite near the truck, keeping in mind the guys on the bridge. Then, use the truck on the bridge as cover to kill the three jackals, and work back and forth to kill the grunts hanging out under the bridge. Next, there may or may not be an elite and some other guys to the left in the rocks past the bridge; if so use the plasma pistol for the elite first, then kill the rest.
After all the enemies are dead, make sure and grab the rocket launcher for up ahead. Take any other weapons, health packs, etc. that are around the right building from the mongeese. Then take one (don’t get on the back of the one Emile (em-eel) is driving) and follow the path that snakes around the battlefield, and don’t stop. There’ll be banshees in the sky, but they generally won’t fire at you. Your biggest concern should be the phantom as you’re about the make the jump over the bridge that’s out. The first time you attempt it, the phantom will shoot you and kill you, no questions asked. When you spawn at the checkpoint in the tunnel before it, wait about 20 seconds until you see it fly away, then make the jump in order to survive.
Next there’ll be a big section of a bunch of brutes, skirmishers, jackals, and a wraith (this is what your rocket is for) There’ll be a weapon shelf on the partly destroyed building directly before this section with DMR ammo. Take the DMR and kill all the brutes and skirmishers first off, way before moving up, and kill the jackals as they bother you. Also, make sure to kill the two needle-riflers out of the nest on the right.
The wraith at the bottom will snipe your ass out of any position as soon as you lay fire on it (and 50% of the time, before that). So make your way through the rocks on the right, shoot your rockets at it, throw grenades, etc. If possible, kill the gunner on the wraith before you get there. When it’s low on health, either continue shooting it with random guns around the section, or rush it (if you get within about 15 feet of it, it’ll usually stop shooting it’s main gun; the gunner will kill you if you get that close though) and jack it.
NOTE: Keeping the wraith alive isn’t quite worth the trouble, as there’s a real thin cave/pathway that you won’t be able to take the wraith through.
Right after the wraith, there’ll be a few needle-riflers and some suicide grunts, so watch it as you approach the rocks before the pathway.
After the cut scene that runs past the pathway, you’ll find a cave with a bunch of those flying bugger things. Take your time getting all those dead, and watch for a line of needle-riflers that’ll come near the water. For the buggers, two shots of the DMR should take one down, but really let your partner AI take care of some of that as to not waste ammo.
Next section will be a sequence looking like the map Boneyard. For this section, make sure that you take the drop shield ability (always helpful) and the Spartan laser on the right side of the path across from the abilities. Use the laser to take out the higher health Elites before jumping down, then pick up a needle rifle or DMR, whichever’s available/has more ammo. Now to tackle the next section, you want your AI doing some work. To make him go down off the cliff without putting yourself way in the way of fire, jump on top of the roof of the building on the left side closest to the cliff. Shoot at the elites whose shields your AI has taken down, to conserve ammo.
Next, go up the left stairs to the top section (any zealots that were up there don’t need to be shot beforehand, because they disappear when you walk up there, as long as you kill the elites on the ground and get the checkpoint first.)
On the back of the top platform, there’ll be a Spartan laser on the left, and a sniper rifle on the right. Take the Spartan laser and kill the three turrets (or if you don’t want to kill all three with the laser, make sure to at least use it on the middle one; that one shoots fuel rod cannons) There’ll be two ghosts riding around, and you can use the laser or the sniper to kill those guys.
Next, there’ll be a section of building with 3-4 elites. I like to lure them out of the building through the left door (up the stairs on the left) and then double-team them with my AI, but you can also take the middle and right entrances. Make sure you find some grenades and a plasma pistol for sure to take these guys out, and be patient with it.
Next you go through a hallway. There’s a room that has doors that malfunction you can get into, and there’s a weapon cache with assault rifles, nades, and most importantly, a shotgun. I don’t particularly like the shotgun, solely because it doesn’t make for much of a one hit kill (at least not consistently), so I’d probably rather a plasma pistol/DMR or needle rifle for this part. Be patient; keep your distance on the four or five zealots/elites that’re in the next room, and back up for a checkpoint every now and then.
Next part is tricky, and in my opinion, fairly luck based. There’ll be two hunters in a room full of skirmishers. Pick up the shotgun on the guy’s dead body to the way right of the door (along with the frag nades) and on the weapon rack on the left, and use your plasma pistol to kill off the scrimmages as you can. With some negotiating of running close into the room with the hunters, the AI will charge into the room and get bashed by the hunters. This is crucial. Toss the 2 plasmas and 2 frags at one of the hunters, and shoot him in the back with the shotgun or plasma pistol, making sure not to attract the attention of the hunter by staying at a marginal distance so he focuses on the AI. Once that hunter goes down, repeat the process on the second one; you can run back in the level and get a couple frag nades, but regardless, you’ll have to use the shotgun more on the second one. Make sure you’re shooting the guns and throwing nades AT THEIR BACK. Otherwise they’ll just raise their shield and regenerate health.
NOTE: You can’t go around this part, no matter how frustrating it gets (trust me, I tried. And the marines waved at me from the other side of the door as I got blasted). It’s irritating to flat out maddening to get right, because the hunters will randomly charge you, but just take it slow, attack fast, back up between kills for checkpoints, and you’ll get it in due time.
Next you’ll get a room with needle riflers, jackals, and an invisible sword guy. There’ll be a DMR on the left side near the boxes that you should definitely pick up and use to kill the riflers first. Then, wait for the invisible elite to push up, and kill it, and take the sword in exchange for the DMR. There’ll be jackals at the top and some grunts, but the main guy’ll be the dual-wield plasma rifle guy. Use the plasma pistol to take down his shield as you get close, running between the boxes, then take the sword out to make sure the slash is a one hit kill.
Next part is the hardest of all the sections, and also the single longest section there is for this mission. The landing zone for the Phantoms is where you’ll be posted up trying to keep clear for Keyes. Go directly to the left tower to find a sniper, and from here, choose your battles, conserve ammo, and especially work with the plasma pistol and the brute shot. There’s also a grenade launcher with 16 shots on the bottom of the sniper building, though I don’t recommend using it unless you have to, as it’s not very effective most of the time. Both of these guns can take out shields/helmets on the brutes and elites that’ll end up attacking. Overcharges on the plasma pistol work wonders on the brutes carrying power weapons, and spamming the trigger will work just as well. Some good spots to post up would be the rafters near where you came in, the rocks under where the mac gun is located, and (though not recommended once you don’t have the sniper) the left building you found the sniper in.
After you kill the third wave of brutes and such (the one with the plasma nade launcher, and you’ll know definitely know that he’s there), pick up a plasma pistol and the DMR that’ll be at the door of the next section on the left near the body. Don’t go into the room just yet.
Stand next to the left side of the entrance and look up to the second floor. Kill the guy that makes the shields strong before doing anything with the three/four elites in the room. Then, go find the a hammer or sword in the carnage of the brute waves and use it to kill the first two elites by going in the room you’ll see to the left of the entrance as soon as you walk in, by plasma overloading and hammering/slashing them. (Note: remember between kills to back out of the room and force a checkpoint, by standing outside the room without moving. This’ll save a lot of frustration.) Next, go straight across the room and use the stairs as a cover spot to overcharge shoot the elite standing there, usually the guy with the fuel rod. There’ll be one more after that, and then you’ll go up to the gun part of it. Use the fuel rod or sword that elite drops to kill the last one, and then proceed up to the gun.
When you get to this part, you have to keep in mind that it is near impossible to shoot down all the phantoms and banshees that come at you while in the gun. So, a convenient solution to this problem is to wait on the staircase behind the gun, and when the guy says to shoot and the middle of the ship you’re supposed to shoot turns red, run up the stairs, get in the gun, and fire at the red circle. You’ve got about ten seconds to do this, so make sure you get there pretty quickly.
And there you go. The first time I did this, it took me a total of about three hours, because A) I hadn’t played the level on a lower difficulty yet, B) I kept getting impatient, and C) I didn’t have a guide of the guns, paths, etc. Hopefully, you guys will learn from my mistakes with this tutorial and be able to pass it within about an hour to an hour and a half’s time.
