My husband just cringes when we go into a home improvement store and I head for the wallpaper section. He should know by now that does not always mean the renovation of another room. So what are some of the different ways I have found to use wallpaper border? Most of them involve a party of some kind. That could also be why he cringes. Everyone likes a party, so here are some of the ways I transform things with wallpaper border:
Have you ever used wallpaper border as a table runner? Use it as your starting point or theme for the party. Since printed paper plates are usually more expensive, pick out the dominant color or colors, not usually more than three, in the border and buy plain paper products to match. You may already have dishes that match. You can cut or fold the border to make matching napkin rings. Since most wallpaper border is pretty expensive,I head for the clearance section first. If the party is small sometimes one roll is enough. Another good source is garage sales. Anyone you know who has wallpaper in there home, probably has some left over that they are willing to give you.
Have you ever used wallpaper and border to wrap packages? Discount stores sometimes have discontinued rolls of wallpaper and border at very good prices. Much cheaper than wrapping paper and much larger quantities. Something you would never think of using in your home could create some really beautiful packages.
Have you ever used wallpaper border to cover paper boxes? The ones that come in all sizes and shapes from the craft store. I have found that the more simple the shape the better. You can apply the border with staples, that can be covered with a strip of ribbon, lace or card stock, this makes it easy to remove them, so the box can be used again. I have used the same boxes over and over,by using this method. The boxes can be filled with fresh flowers by setting a glass or plastic container inside. Of course silk or dried arrangement could also be used. If you are doing a table scape, boxes with the lid on or inverted can create many different heights on which to set other items.
Have you ever thought to frame sections of wallpaper border? Find a border with larger sized subject matter. You are limited by the size of the border as to what size picture you can make, you can also add a matte to make the picture larger. I take the frame without the backing, hold it over the border to see what section would create the best pictures. On your table, the framed pictures can be set on easels. You can also duplicate items in the pictures with the real thing, like a basket of apples,or real sea shells depending on the subject matter of the border.
Just have fun! I don’t think you will look at wallpaper border quite the same again. The possibilities are endless.
