Give your students a tropical escape with this Hawaii themed lesson plan. All activities in this lesson are designed for small group, large group, and homeschool settings.
Beach Ball Volleyball
Inflate a couple of beach balls and toss them in the air. See how long the class can keep the balls in the air without stopping.
Hide plastic gold coins, faux necklaces, and other shiny items in the sandbox. Give students shovels and let them search for buried treasure. For extra fun, draw a treasure map and follow it as a class to the sandbox.
Sea Shell and Sea Item Observations
Place an assortment of sea shells, dried starfish, and coral on a table. Provide magnifying glasses for students to observe the texture and patterns of the items. Have coloring pages with seashell and starfish pictures on them so students can record their observations.
Footprints in the Sand
Paint each child’s feet with glue and make two footprints with glue on a yellow piece of construction paper. Sprinkle the footprints with sand to create sandy footprints.
Show students where Hawaii is on a map. Show them how an island is surrounded on all sides by water. Give them a coloring page with the state of Hawaii printed on it. Let them color the ocean blue and the land green.
Tissue Paper Leis
Cut a piece of string for each child and provide different colors of tissue paper cut out into small squares with hole punched in them. Let students thread the tissue paper onto the yarn and tie the ends together to make a colorful lei.
Set up a saltwater aquarium in the classroom and put in a few tropical fish. Let students share the responsibility of feeding the fish.
Have a beach day where students can wear their swimsuits. Fill a plastic wading pool with water, fill the sandbox with seashells to dig up, set up a beachball volleyball court, and provide Frisbees and other beach toys.
Waves in a bottle
Fill half of a water bottle with water dyed blue. Fill the remainder of the bottle with baby oil and super glue the lid to the top. Oil and water don’t mix so students can make waves by rocking their bottles back and forth.
Have a luau luncheon with some of the following items for students to sample: pineapple, coconut, mango, ham (or spam), papaya, macadamia nuts, and guava. Serve fruit juices with paper umbrellas in them, too.
