Measurements for risk factors of heart disease in children at age nine or older aides in evaluating the chances of atherosclerosis in adulthood, according to a new study.
Atherosclerosis is the process in which deposits of fatty substances such as cholesterol and calcium build up in the inner lining of the artery and most of the times it starts in childhood.
Researchers had examined at what age childhood heart disease risk factors have the most impact on adult carotid artery intima-media thickness (IMT), an indicator that may reveal early atherosclerosis. The carotid artery provides oxygenated blood to the head and neck and the thickness is measured by using non-invasive ultra sound.
Researchers gathered information of 4,380 participants of four alike studies which had included heart disease risk factors in children and IMT measurements in adulthood.
At the early age of age nine, children who had the greatest heart disease risk factors such as high levels of total cholesterol, blood pressure and greater body mass index, had shown a 37% increased rate of heightened adult IMT in comparison to all other children.
By the time of age 12, children in the highest heart disease risk factor group had a 48% greater risk of heightened adult IMT. By the age of 15 the risk factor had gone up t o56%.
This study advocates that the importance of heart healthy life style has to start in childhood.
According to Dr. Markus Juonala, M.D.,PhD, lead researcher of the study and professor at Turku University Hospital in Turku, Finland, remarks that health practitioners should be aware that cardiovascular risk evaluation is beneficial at age nine. Public health officials should take reference that more policies are needed in fighting obesity along with the risk factors.
Some alternative treatments to lower the risk in children for heart disease:
Chiropractic treatments can also be used to fight heart disease.
Research has demonstrated that adjustments to the upper portion of the neck can have positive results on greatly lowering blood pressure for extended periods of time.
Research also has shown adjustments to the lower back can stimulate certain nervous reflexes which produces an overall decrease in heart rate and blood pressure.
Chiropractors are trained health care practitioners and can provide nutritional advice, life style recommendations, herbs and supplements.
Regular chiropractic treatments have shown to greatly benefit persons to lower their risk for heart disease.
The American Heart Association recommends children should have thirty minutes a day of moderate to intense exercise.
The benefits provided for children who exercise include controlled weight, raising the good cholesterol levels and reduces risk for heart disease.
Some exercises recommended are:
Strength training done by exercise machines, free weights and elastic bands. Strength training provides many benefits to the heart along with a reduction in body fat and increasing bone density.
Yoga provides many benefits to children it enhances their strength and flexibility. They become more relaxed and stress levels are reduced.
Yoga for children is very different from for adults. So when looking into yoga studios or instructors make sure they have experience in yoga for children.
Children need to maintain a healthy weight to keep their energy in balance. Energy is calories. What is consumed is the energy source.
Make sure foods are lower in fat and have less calories.
Foods rich in minerals, vitamins and other nutrients vital to health. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low fat or fat free milk and dairy products and lean meat are just a few.
