TV Christmas movies provide a big dose of all the things Christmas is all about: family, friends, love, and generosity. If you’re looking for some heartwarming or tear jerker Christmas movies in the days leading up to Christmas, here are some of the best you may not have heard of.
Each of these movies has all the requisite elements necessary to make it a heartwarming, tear jerker Christmas movie-the kind you want to watch with a big cup of hot chocolate in your hands, and a box of tissues nearby.
J.T. (1969). Although I haven’t seen this movie in many, many, years I think of it every Christmas, and wish it would show up on some TV channel. Kevin Hooks plays a young boy living in Harlem who finds a beat-up old cat a few days before Christmas. The relationship between the boy and the cat is incredibly touching. Beware: this is the “mother” of all tear jerker Christmas movies.
A Season for Miracles (1998). Carla Gugino plays a woman who ‘kidnaps’ the son and daughter of her drug-addicted sister to keep them out of foster care. But with no good way to support them, keeping them fed, clothed, and housed is difficult. The new family hides out trying to make it work, and eventually the wonder of Christmas visits them.
The Christmas Shoes (2002). This movie is about a boy who wants to buy a special pair of shoes for his sick mother, but doesn’t have enough money, until a stranger helps him. Like in all good tear-jerker Christmas movies, everyone learns what’s really important. Rob Lowe and Kimberly Williams-Paisley star.
Silver Bells (2005). The son of a Christmas tree farmer runs away once the family hits New York to sell the trees. He meets a woman who helps him pursue his dream of being a photographer. Love is in the air, though it takes some time to find it in this movie with Anne Heche and Tate Donovan in leading roles. A Hallmark Hall of Fame Movie.
A Golden Christmas (2009). Mix a secret childhood friendship, a battle over a house purchase, a beautiful but slightly mysterious dog, and Christmas, and eventually you get the best in everyone. Starring Andrea Roth and Nicholas Brendon. This movie is fun, and not as much of a tear jerker as other Christmas movies in this list.
The Three Gifts (2009). Dean Cain plays a toymaker who fosters three boys when the orphanage they live in is undergoing renovations. Did I forget to mention it’s Christmastime? Boys make trouble, parents fall in love with rowdy boys, but will they adopt? Only Santa knows.
November Christmas (2010). John Corbett and Sarah Paulson play parents of a young girl with cancer. Though they don’t want to admit it, they’re afraid she may not make it to the holidays, so they bring her the holidays early, with the help of the entire community they live in. A Hallmark Hall of Fame Movie.
If watching tear jerker Christmas movies is one of the ways you like to spend the days leading up to Christmas, ‘Tis the season. Check your TV schedule and mark your calendars: you may be able to catch some of them. If not, they’re available for purchase.
Hallmark Hall of Fame Movies are available for purchase here. All other movies, with the exception of J.T., can be purchased at Amazon. An Internet search for J.T. with the name Kevin Hooks or something similar brings up possible places to purchase a copy of this movie.
