The highest scoring NFL game ever happened over 40 years ago. In fact, the highest scoring NFL game in history involved the Redskins, as they were on the right end of a 72-41 game against the Giants in 1966. But last night, it almost looked like they would be on the wrong end of an even greater blowout. Yet since the Redskins only gave up 59 points to the Eagles, it did not set any all-time league records. However, it was a bit of Monday Night Football infamy, as this was one of the highest-scoring game in the history of that series.
Monday Night Football has gone on for about 40 years. Although it has changed announcers and even networks during that time, it never saw a game like the one from last night. In fact, no one ever saw a start like the one from last night in Washington.
The Eagles-Redskins game was on pace for the highest-scoring NFL game, or at least on pace for the biggest blowout. After 15+ minutes, the Eagles were up 35-0, before the Redskins even got a first down. Washington then finally got in on the act with two touchdowns of their own, then promptly gave up 10 more points before halftime.
By the half, the Eagles were up 45-14, as they had one of the biggest first-half explosions of all time. However, they let up in the second half and only got two more touchdowns. As it turned out, their 59 points were only tied for the most in the league this season.
Yet when Oakland got 59 points against Denver last month, it was on a Sunday afternoon. Since this happened on Monday night, it made history as the highest-scoring game for one team in Monday night history.
The Eagles’ 59 points were the most that one team ever scored in Monday night football, although it wasn’t the highest combined score. That game also involved the Redskins, as Washington and Green Bay combined for 95 points in a 1983 battle. But the Redskins lost that shootout 48-47.
Not only are the Redskins in the highest-scoring game of all time, they are also in the most prolific Monday night game ever, and have now given up the most Monday night points ever. In addition, they gave up the most points in NFL history in 1940, with their legendary 73-0 loss to the Bears in that year’s title game. In these games, the Redskins are a combined 1-3.
It took 40 years for one team to nearly score 60 points on Monday night. The all-time record is still safe at 73, as last night wasn’t even the worst game in Redskins history.
