Hillsborough River State Park is a gem in the developed urban areas of central Florida. Located near Tampa, Florida, the river leads all the way into the city and eventually into the bay. There are many miles of trails, canoeing and kayaking, camping, fishing and even a restaurant at this great Florida state park.
Camping at Hillsborough River State Park is one of the best in the state. This full facility 112 site campground offers electricity, water, fire ring and picnic table at each site. Each campground loop hosts restrooms, hot showers and a laundry. A dump station is set up for RV’s of up to 50 feet in length.
Hillsborough River State Park offers swimming like no other park in the state. A half acre swimming pool is located near the parks playground and concession. The Spirit of the Woods Poolside Café offers snacks and drinks to enjoy after a fun day of swimming. Picnic pavilions and playground are located beside the pool for the perfect lunch stop for the kids.
One of the most popular spots at Hillsborough River State Park is the Rapids Nature Trail. This picturesque nature trail takes visitors along an ancient oak hammock to limestone outcroppings along the Hillsborough River. Here Class II rapids form a popular spot for pictures and wildlife viewing. But don’t bring the canoe up here; the rapids are off limits to boaters.
Canoeing and kayaking the Hillsborough River is a very popular pastime here at Hillsborough River State Park. Bring your own boat and put in at the many different spots up and down the river. Canoes can be rented at the concession stand for $10 plus tax per hour or $25 for four hours plus tax.
Biking at Hillsborough River State Park is the perfect pastime for those who don’t like to get their feet wet. Bring your own off-road bike, or rent one at the parks concession for $4 per hour or $10 for four hours plus tax. Nearly four mile of paved and nature trails offer visitors scenic rides of varying difficulties. Kids under 14 must wear helmets in accordance with Florida state law.
But you don’t need transportation to enjoy Hillsborough River State Park. Hiking the nearly eight miles of trails allows visitors to see the real Florida. Four trails of varying difficulty and length provide the perfect setting for outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy the park. Maps are available at the ranger station.
