This year, treat yourself and your family to a fun event by making family night a Halloween costume night. I was very impressed when I went online to see what was available, and found patterns from some of my favorite suppliers, including Simplicity and Butterick. I settled on historical costumes. I hope the following information helps you make a decision as to what to wear for Halloween.
Priced at $10.95, the theme in the Alice In Wonderland Costumes is Alice, easily recognizable as Alice. You will enjoy creating this ‘good for many Halloweens’ Alice outfit. Like most Simplicity patterns, the instructions are specific and easy to follow. Size R5 covers 14 – 22. The dress uses from 5 ½ – 5 7/8 yards of broadcloth, calico, gingham, sateen, satin, or shantung, 45″ w. Extra contrast material and interfacing are needed for the collar, bodice and underlay. Priced at $10.17, this historical sewing pattern is a perfect Nanny McPhee costume! Follow the somber colors and you’ve got it! I looked at the needs for sizes 16 – 22. The jacket will need from 2- 5/8 yards – 3-1/4 yards of twill, gabardine, velvet, brocade, or tapestry, and the skirt 3- 5/8 yards of cotton, satin, sateen, crepe, shantung, silk, taffeta, or jacquard. Notions include buttons, beads, gathered lace, scalloped lace trim, 7″ zipper, and a hook & eye.
At a price $9.57, you won’t even have to read fortunes! With a gypsy theme – we all have a bit of gypsy blood in us somewhere- you will enjoy this costume pattern. Add a gold, glittery ankle bracelet to sparkle and shine this Halloween. A size 16 – 18 Halloween costume pattern requires 2 ½ yards of 45″ material for the top, and the skirt requires 6- 1/8 yards. The scarf needs 1-1/8 yard on cotton, cotton blends, satin, or taffeta. Notions include elastic, ribbons, bias tape, and fringe
Butterick B5406 , hat B
With a price of $9.57, you can have fun all year long. Sometimes you cannot wear the whole costume, but can wear a part of one. This incredible witches’ hat is just right for that classy Halloween touch of sass. Any size head can be covered with one of these stylish costume patterns. You will need, among other things, ¾ yard of interfacing, using synthetic leather, brocade, velvet, velveteen, or novelty cotton. Notions include bias tape, poster board, pompom, black pipe cleaners, a purchased boa and ribbon.
Let’s not forget the guys! For $8.97, they will enjoy this Halloween costume pattern. The theme is Colonial men’s casual, and that is what they will be. I checked the materials needed for size 40. There is a loose- fitting, unlined coat that will take approximately 3 -1/2 yards of velvet, velveteen, wool, wool blends. The vest requires 1- ½ yard and the pants call for 1 – 7/8 yards . The pants are loose and made from wool blends or gabardine. Notions include buttons, elastic, and lace ruffles for sleeves.
On sale, this Halloween sewing pattern is only $4. The theme is a Poodle skirt costume, reminiscent of the 50’s, when poodle skirts were “in.” A size 12 costume pattern lists the skirt requiring 4 – 1/8 yard felt, broadcloth, or lightweight satin. Notions include a zipper, poodle, jewel stones, pompom, and cord.
At just $10.17, you can make a crown for every man in the house, because every man’s a prince or a king at sometime in his life. This Halloween pattern covers all sizes. Crown B needs ¼ yard of flannel lame and metallic vinyl, 7/8 yard metallic trim, beads and jewel stones, straight pins, glue gun and jewel glue. Don’t let it go their heads; require that they still take out the trash.
For only $10.15, this pattern will continue to provide Halloween sewing enjoyment for years to come. Theme B is a Ladybug. To make the size M Halloween costume, you will need 1- 7/8 yards of calico, cotton, broadcloth, or satin. Notions include material for wings

Priced at $10.15, this is the same pattern kit as above. The Bumblebee, theme D, is a classic. For size M, use 2 – 1/3 yards of calico, cotton, broadcloth, or satin. The cape is ½ yard of 60″ plus lining for the synthetic fur.
