Flour sack towels are one of the most versatile items that can be within a home. While somewhat delicate and pretty, they are quite tough and reusable. This flour sack towel monogram ornament project repurposes a generic item and turns it into a unique holiday decoration that would be perfect for a Shabby Chic style tree. Create a set for use within an entire tree theme or a couple to use as gifts.
For this project, you will need (per ornament):
– A new or clean flour sack towel (available at stores like Walmart for only a few dollars)
– Four to five inch monogram shaped stencil
– Iron and ironing board
– Fabric marking pencil
– Fabric scissors
– Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic Finishing Spray
– Organza ribbon
– Coordinating thread
– Newspaper and/or a large drop cloth
Place a brand new or completely clean (stain free) flower sack towel flat on an ironing board. Heat the iron to a warm or slightly cool setting. Press the flower sack towel to remove any wrinkling and make it easier to construct your monogram design. Once cool, lay the towel out flat on your work area.
Using a fabric marking pencil and a four to five inch monogram stencil, trace the image onto the flour sack towel. Very carefully cut out the monogram from the towel with fabric scissors.
Lay the lettering out flat. Spray both sides of the monogram with three to four good coats Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic Finishing Spray. (This will stiffen the fabric and allow it to work well as an ornament on your holiday tree.) Dry completely.
Cut a piece of organza ribbon to create a hanging loop for the ornament. Using a needle and a coordinating piece of thread, sew the hanging loop onto the top of the flour sack monogram piece. Hang from your holiday tree or as part of gift packaging, as desired.
TIP: You can also add other decoration to the lettering. Consider giving the flour sack fabric a good coat of Krylon Glitter Spray in Shimmering Silver or Krylon Glitter Spray in Glistening Gold at the same time you add the acrylic spray. Or, consider embroidering the flour sack towel fabric with a custom design prior to cutting out the lettering shape. This is also a great project for repurposing old vintage handkerchiefs or other delicate style linens.
