Laughter is good medicine, so making the choice to give a friend or family member a funny gift for the holidays might be just what the doctor ordered. To give the right funny gift, you really need to know the recipient well, because what is funny to one person might just be offensive to another person. Finding funny gifts that are still tasteful is also sometimes a tall order. Here are a few of my ideas for funny gifts that might suit someone in your life.
Digital Image Poster Fun-– If you are handy with a computer and know your way around image editing software, you can make all sorts of fun and funny gifts. Perhaps your teenage daughter has a crush on a certain teen heartthrob. With a little digital photo magic, you can create a poster, or an 8×10 of her and her crush, making her dreams look like it is a reality. This is a gift not just suited for teens. I’d be thrilled with a framed photo of me arm in arm with Robert Redford. (A slightly younger me, maybe.)
Stress Reduction Golf Balls-– For the golfer in your life, hand paint a box of golf balls with pictures of his boss, names of politicians he dislikes, or words that sum up his daily frustration. Then when he has had a bad day, let him whack away his frustration, in a more literal sense, out in the back yard, or on the greens. It is inexpensive and therapeutic, too.
Autographed Baseball-– Among baseball fans, an autographed baseball is a popular gift, and usually a pretty expensive one, too. You do not need to spend a fortune to give your fan an autographed baseball. Simply buy a nice baseball at a sporting goods store, and have all of his friends, family or coworkers sign it. Heck, using total strangers might be even more funny. Do not forget the little plastic box for him to show it off in. Presentation is everything.
As See On TV– There are many products being sold on the TV that are pretty funny, and somewhat practical, too. Look how well that blanket thing that you zip yourself into has done, and think about all of the fun people made of it. You can find As Seen On TV gifts at store near you–usually drugstores, or house ware type stores. If your wife has chuckled over something being advertised that slices, dices, juiliennes, and does her laundry, pick one up for her, but make certain that the funny gift is balanced with another gift more sentimental or sparkly. We women are funny like that when it comes to funny gifts from spouses. Of course, if it’s for your best friend, that is a whole different thing.
It is okay to give funny gifts during the holidays, just be sure that you use good taste, and save your sense of humor for someone who will truly appreciate it. When in doubt, err on the side of caution, and save the funny gifts for coworkers and close friends, not your wife, or your Great Aunt Prudence. Have a fun and happy holiday season!
