As we get older, the holidays may become harder. Yet, if we have some set goals in mind on how to handle some of the holiday chores before we have to do them all, we may be able to relive some stress on our mind and body. Here are some tips that may help.
Find the time to exercise
This may cause you to frown. Exercise may not sound fun. Exercise may be something you think you don’t have time to do now that the holidays are approaching. Yet, if you can find the time for a simple walk, a simple stretching session, ten or twenty minutes stepping on and off a stepping device, you will find that you have better use of your body, your mind may feel a little stretching and your body will feel fitter once you tackle those holiday chores.
Watch how you lift
You will be lifting many bags and many items this time of the year. If you aren’t lifting properly, now is the time to learn how to do this. You are supposed to lift with your legs and keep your spine still as you do this. The key to this movement is the stillness in your spine.
Toning your hands and forearms
If you have arthritis in your hands and forearms, now is the season in which it will become aggravated with all the wrapping and all the stirring. Yes, you can relieve it with some pain relievers, along with the use of heating pads. But the best remedy of all is to strengthen your muscles and your joints. To do this simply take a tennis ball, wrap your hand and fingers around it. Now grip it several times throughout the day.
Relieving foot pain
Wearing high heels, walking all day at the mall, and dancing at all those fun parties can make our feet and our heels tired and achy. What can we do to help ease the pain? We can reach for the pain pills or we can learn how to do a proper calf stretch. Stand behind a chair. Place your hands on the back of the chair, extend one leg backwards, keeping your foot flat on the floor. Your other leg should be bent. Hold the position for the count of ten. Repeat. Do about three reps on each leg.
Learn to delegate
Allow others to help you with your chores. You will get things done faster and you will have more time to do other things you enjoy
Just because we are getting older doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy the holidays. We just may have to make a few adjustments here and there.
