If you want to give your family some of the old traditions at Christmas, there are many to choose from that range from decorating to singing carols. Many families want to start their own traditions and this is very easy to do as well. The following are some holiday traditions new and old that you can use to enable your family to have a happier holiday season.
• Caroling – This has been a long standing tradition that has fallen to the wayside a bit in the past few years. You hardly ever see carolers out and about singing from door to door. Why not get some of your family and friends together and work on some carols for your neighborhood. Nothing is more beautiful at Christmas Eve than hearing the favorite carols sang live.
• Christmas Cookies – Getting the family together to bake Christmas cookies and then decorate them has never been easier. You do not even have to make the dough any longer as there are package that come premade that you just roll out and use your favorite cookie cutter to create all the Christmas imagery you can imagine. When the cookies are cooled off, allow the children and adults to decorate their own cookies in whatever way they choose. Then each child and adult can leave a special cookie on a plate for Santa.
• Take Care of Nature – While the holidays are meant for all the people in your life, there are also those furry little critters that live in the wild that may not have such a great day because food is hard to come by in the winter. You and your children can start a tradition of making small food baskets for the wildlife in your area. This does not have to be elaborate, you can just spread some bird seed in the yard or you can create peanut butter pine cones that you can hang from the tree for the squirrels to enjoy.
• Remember the Solstice – The solstice is the longest day of the year and the darkest as well. This is when winter starts moving back towards spring as the days begin to get longer. You can teach your children about this day, December 22, can bring them closer to nature. Make decorative bags that have designs cut into them where you can place votives with candles inside to welcome the coming of spring.
There is no limit to what you can do to create new holiday traditions and to continue with those that are entrenched in your family’s history. Allow the children to come up with some of their own ideas for holiday traditions and you might be amazed at their creativity. The holidays are a time for family and new traditions can quickly become old ones.
