Decorative pillar candle holders make for an interesting and inexpensive home accent. This green and gold pillar candleholder project takes just a bit of paint to create, but looks very elegant when finished.
For this project, you will need (per pillar candleholder):
– One unfinished wooden pillar candleholder (available at craft supply stores)
– Medium or fine grit sandpaper
– Tack cloth or other similar style soft cloth
– Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White
– Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Ivy Leaf
– Krylon Leafing Pen in 14K Gold
– Masking tape
– Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic Finishing Spray
– Cream colored pillar candle
– Newsprint and/or a large drop cloth
Cover the area you will be creating your green and gold pillar candleholders with sheets of old newsprint and/or a large sized drop cloth. Sand the outside of the unfinished wooden pillar candleholder with medium or fine grit sandpaper sheets. Wipe down the outside of the candleholder with a tack cloth or other similar type of soft cloth to remove any grit left behind by the sandpaper.
Prime the entire outside of the wooden pillar candleholder with a few even coats of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. Let the primed wood dry completely. Paint the candleholder with three to five thick coats of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Ivy Leaf. Keep adding coats of green paint until you have reached the desired level of green hue. Allow the candleholder to dry for several hours before proceeding.
Use a ruler and a pencil to create one inch high horizontal band around the top and bottom of the green painted pillar candleholder. Apply masking tape to the candleholder to protect the paint in all areas except the exposed band area at the top and bottom.
Fill in the two one inch high horizontal bands using a Krylon Leafing Pen in 14K Gold. Wait an hour, apply a second coat of gold paint, and then dry overnight. (If the gold paint is coming out too thin, keep applying more coats before drying overnight.)
Remove all masking tape from the pillar candleholder. Spray the wood candleholder using a few thick coats of Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic Finishing Spray. Let the pillar candleholder dry completely before placing a cream colored pillar candle atop and enjoying.
TIP: Create two of these green and gold pillar candleholders for a matching set or centerpiece idea.
