A thick white or creamy lesion and an inflamed tongue are the usual signs of an oral thrush. These lesions are very sensitive, thus touching them can cause them to bleed. Oral thrush can be caused by a very weak immune system. It can also be an adverse effect of using too much corticosteroids and antibiotics. Anti- fungal medications are the drug of choice for this kind of condition but there are also home remedies for white tongue that are equally effective.
What causes this condition is a fungus known as candida albicans. The best way to prevent the fungus from spreading is by not feeding it. Sugar and gluten are the usual sources of food for the fungus, so it is best to avoid food products that contain them. A lot of commercial products contain gluten such as milk, bread, and cereal. If you want to avoid these products, there are other substitutes available which can be found at the health section in most grocery stores.
This condition should be given immediate attention because of its ability to spread quickly to the throat and sometimes to the esophagus which can lead to more complications.
Here are some home remedies for white tongue that you can easily try:
1. Mix 1/2 tsp of salt and 3 ounces of warm water and gargle with this mixture for about 45 seconds. Gargle with it thoroughly before you spit it out. Repeat this twice daily for immediate relief.
2. The next procedure after gargling would be the scraping of the tongue. Get another ½ tsp of salt. Sprinkle it on your tongue then brush it with your toothbrush. It is not necessary to brush too hard becaue the bristles of the toothbrush will scrub off the white bumps easily. There might be a little discomfort, though. Continue this until all the areas of your tongue have been brushed thoroughly. Gargle with water and check your tongue. Focus on the areas that require the most attention. Repeat the procedure, makig sure that you rinse your mouth with water after every brushing.
After this, clean your toothbrush then use it to remove the white residues on your tongue. You may also use a tongue scraper. Once the oral thrush is removed, make it a habit to brush your teeth on a regular basis and gargle with mouthwash after every brushing.
3. Maintain a gluten and sugar free diet, until you see all the symptoms disappear. You should also avoid using too many medications such as antibiotics and corticosteroids, which can destroy the natural beneficial bacteria in your body that keeps the candida albicans in control. Try to include probiotics, “the friendly bacteria” in your diet, such as yogurt. Maintaining a healthy digestive tract through the right diet can help prevent any recurrence of oral thrush.
If your condition persists, despite doing these home remedies for white tongue, consult your doctor right away in order to rule out other serious causes.
