Christmas can be such a busy time of the year. It is easy to get caught up in all of the commercialism and pressure to get it all done, and lose the true meaning of Christmas. Have you thought about giving a gift that you didn’t have to fight the crowds to purchase? Making homemade gifts may be something to consider. Gifts you have handmade have special meaning to those who receive them, and they won’t be taken back and exchanged.
If you have considered handmade presents, and don’t know where to begin, you may want to start by making homemade Christmas cards this year. Everyone loves to get something that has been made with them in mind. It makes a Christmas card even more special to the recipient when you have taken the time to do something special for them.
Designing and making homemade Christmas cards together can be a great way to spend time with your family. They don’t take expensive material to make. You can create them with things you already have lying around the house.
You will need some envelopes. When you design your Christmas cards, consider the size, so as to make sure they fit inside the envelopes you have on hand. It’s no fun trying to find the right sized envelopes after the cards are finished.
You will also need some card stock, scissors, glue, colored pencils, and markers. If you would like, you can buy special paper such as that used for scrapbooking, rubber stamps and ink pads of different colors, embellishments from the scrapbook section of your craft store, embossing powder and heat gun, glitter glue, Christmas print fabric etc. The list could go on. The creativity of your Christmas cards should be limited only by your imagination and budget.
Think about the colors you want in your card. Choose two or three coordinating colors that are going to be used throughout the Christmas card. What kind of pictures do you want to use? Do you want to use a family photo or draw your own pictures? If you aren’t that artistic, maybe you could buy clipart online at one of the many stock photography websites such as istockphoto or canstockphoto. You could also do a search for coloring pages in whichever theme you are using. That may turn up some nice pictures that you can print out and color for your design.
Do you want your handmade Christmas card to be flat, or do you want to design a little dimension into it? Think about how you are going to deliver your card if it will not fit smoothly into an envelope.
Also consider the person who will be receiving the card. Do they have a special occupation or hobby that could be used in designing their card? Is this Christmas a special one for the family? Are they welcoming a new baby into their family? Do they have a new puppy or kitten? The possibilities are endless.
