Have a box; make a game themed Halloween costume. Creative Halloween costumes don’t have to be expensive. In fact, some of the cleverest Halloween costumes are home made outfits. While you can spend a lot of time and money making a Halloween costume, you can also make creative Halloween costumes from a discarded cardboard box.
You might be wondering where to get a cardboard box if you don’t have one lying around your house. Call any local store that sells large ticket items like televisions, washer and dryers and such and ask them to keep one for you. Ask them when, where and how you can pick up your box.
Begin by cutting an opening for the head and arms. Paint the box white, spray paint seems like the easiest way to do this. Spray outside on a calm day for best results. Multiple coats work best rather than one heavy and drippy coating. Once dry, apply a black horizontal line and as many dots as you desire. Once again this can be done with a template and spray paint, or cut out paper, or even easier, black contact paper. Make multiples for an entire group of friends traveling together!
Similar to the Domino costume above, Dice can be made the same way using a more square shaped box. Dice are often white but they do come in different colors and the dots could be different colors or just black. The same materials used for the Domino costume above will work for making the dots on this dice costume. The Dice costume would work great for twins, a couple or two friends traveling together.
Another box costume idea is to create a card. It can be a regular playing card or a role playing game card. This idea takes a bit more creative talent. Begin by painting the box white. An easy solution for transferring an image to the box is to use a projector to project the image on the box and just trace around the image. Then paint or decorate the box as desired.
Box of Crayons
In this design, you will use the box right side up and cut holes for the arms and legs. The open top of the box is where your head will go along with the other crayons. Similar to the Card Costume above, paint the box and decorate as desired. In addition you can roll large colored paper to make the crayon tubes. If you are very talented, you can make a hat out of felt to simulate the point of the crayon – choose your favorite color and dress in that color, use other colors for the rest of the crayons.
The great thing about box costumes is that you can easily remove them. And, underneath you can wear your own clothing for comfort. If the weather isn’t cooperating, you can easily add a sweater or jacket and not interfere with your costume. Once you are done with the holiday, just throw your costume away – better yet, recycle it!
