When my fiance came home from the rig with a sore shoulder and a bruise as big as my head on his thigh, I suddenly remembered the heating pad/ice pack remedies my grandma used to use on me when I was little. Perfect for cramps, aches, headaches, burns, and any other body pain, these easy-to-make heating pads can be turned into ice packs by simply tossing them in the freezer. Great to have around (just in case) and so simple you can make a bunch of em just for when you need them.
All you need is an old sock (a large one, like a tube sock, preferably) and rice or dried beans. That’s it. Simply fill the sock 3 quarters of the way full with rice (even instant rice will do) or dried beans and tie a firm knot at the end of the sock, allowing about an inch of room for mobility of the homemade heating pad so it’s flexible for use.
Warm the sock in the microwave for 2 minutes to use as a heating pad. The sock will be steaming and burning hot, so be careful. You can place it in the microwave for a minute to avoid over-heating, but I like 2 minutes so the heat lasts longer. Simply place the sock on the aching area (if it’s too hot, place material under the heating pad) and enjoy steady heat for around a half hour before re-heating.
To turn the heating pad sock into an ice pack, simply place it in the freezer for a few hours for instant cool when you need it. We have 4 socks- 2 in the freezer just in case we need them (I use them on my crampy hands and eye strain pain), and my fiance takes a sock to work with him out on the rig, and I have another on top of the microwave for instant warming in the microwave for when my shoulder acts up.
I can’t believe I had completely forgotten about this simple home remedy for easing aches and pains. I’ve even made a sock filled with instant rice and peppermint oil so I get the soothing peppermint relief when I have an ache in my shoulder (I have a weird shoulder due to a collar bone injury several years ago). It gives me that “Ahhh…” relief and the peppermint helps stimulate my sore muscles, like Ben-gay only better.
Hope these simple heating pad and ice pack remedies work for you- they’re a lifesaver in our house!
