One of the hottest characters this year is Hit-Girl from the comic book movie Kick-Ass. There are several stores that sell Hit-Girl Halloween costumes, but most are currently out of stock. The cool thing about making your own homemade Hit-Girl costume though is that you can create the look out of items you like and will wear again. And, you can stand out from the other girls who will be wearing store bought costumes by wearing something that is naturally more unique since it will be your own creation.
Homemade Hit-Girl Costume Ideas – The Skirt
One key idea to dressing like the comic book or movie character Hit-Girl is to obtain a plaid skirt.
Don’t worry about trying to find the exact skirt shown in Kick-Ass. But if you want to achieve the main look the movie markets, then finding a purple skirt would work best. The store American Eagle (www.ae.com) currently has a purple plaid skirt that’s pleated on clearance for just $9.95 from their online store.
With the right accessories, any plaid skirt though really should work. If you or your tween or teen already has a plaid skirt to wear as part of a school uniform, you could save money by just creating the look around it.
Homemade Hit-Girl Costume Ideas – Top
Obviously more than a plaid skirt is needed, but the top you choose is not that important in my opinion. My idea would be to try to find something you already own that would go with the skirt or buy something you actually like enough to wear on its own.
The store bought look for the Kick-Ass movie character features a purple vinyl jacket and purple leggings. If you can find a purple vinyl jacket, that might work best if the goal is to achieve as close to the same look as possible. Otherwise, any shiny purple top should work fine. If the weather will be cold for trick or treating this Halloween, wearing a purple bubble jacket (like this) is one option. Less cold, one could opt for a purple vest (like this) or windbreaker (like this).
Again though, don’t get stuck on the idea that it has to be purple or has to be a shiny material. For instance, a black jacket, purple fleece, or white uniform shirt are all options that could work with the skirt.
Homemade Hit-Girl Costume Ideas – Leggings
Then, you need to buy purple leggings or tights to wear underneath the skirt, and add black knee pads. The knee pads can be made out of scraps of black cloth and attached to the leggings by sewing, safety pinning, or gluing. Or real knee pads could be worn.
Homemade Hit-Girl Costume Ideas – Shoes
A pair of black lace-up boots is best for shoes. If you don’t want to have to buy a new pair of boots, a homemade idea would be to take a large pair of black socks that can be stretched and worn over a pair of shoes that could give the illusion of black boots.
Homemade Hit-Girl Costume Ideas – Hair
Another key component to the Kick-Ass movie character look is the hair. Most likely you or your tween or teen will need to buy a short purple wig. You can find these online at Amazon.com.
Spirit Halloween (www.spirithalloween.com) also sells a purple gogo wig for adults that costs $9.99 online.
Homemade Hit-Girl Costume Ideas – Accessories
As for accessories, the most important for the Kick-Ass movie look is probably the black half mask. Most costume shops carry these or you could make your own out of the same cloth you use for the knee pads.
Then a black cape is needed. The cape can also be made out of an old black sheet or cloth. A last minute option would be to make a cape using a trash bag even.
Also needed for the outfit are a pair of black gloves. Most costume shops will carry these too. The closest I’ve seen to resembling the gloves in the store bought look are Darth Vader gloves. Childrens Darth Vader gloves can be bought at Buy Costumes for $9.99 online. A last minute homemade costume idea would be to use dish washing gloves and paint them black.
And a Hit-Girl belt would complete the look. One suggestion for that is to use a real belt and cover it in pink cloth or paper, and then draw on the HG initials.
