When you’re a beginner to the world of sewing you largely rely on store-bought patterns. However, even if you’re no expert you can easily make many different designs of lingerie without a pattern. Although simple to make the lingerie pieces will be gorgeous. Since they’re all so easy to make you’ll look fabulously sexy every night of your honeymoon!
Use a piece of lace, satin or lightweight tricot to make a simple nightgown that can have many different looks. Wrap the piece of fabric around your chest, just above the breasts and below the underarm area, to decide how much fabric you will need. Cut the piece to be several inches wider than needed. Make a hem across the top and bottom edges of the material. Place the right sides together and sew up the side seam. Now sew quarter-inch elastic around the top edge.
The gown above can be changed in many different ways. Make it floor-length or baby-doll length. Turn the seam to go down the back or make it go up the front. If you place the seam in the front or back, sew it down partially, then leave the rest open to the hem. Add ruffles, ribbon, bows and lace to create the look you want. Make straps by attaching pieces of ribbon or even wide lace strips.
The above gown will have yet a different appearance when you sew on yet another piece of elastic. Before sewing the elastic around the top edge, sew a piece between the breasts. Start at the top edge and, while stretching the elastic, use a zigzag stitch to sew it down a few inches. The length you cut the elastic will depend upon your bra size. You’ll need a longer piece of elastic for a large cup size.
Make a completely different nightgown design for your honeymoon by cutting a large rectangle of material that reaches from the front to the back. If you want the gown to go to the knees, cut the piece to reach from the front of your knees to the backside of your knees. Cut the piece to be as wide as your shoulders or hips – whichever is wider.
Cut a hole out for the neckline then hem around it. Hem down both long sides and both short sides of the gown. Sew wide lace down the sides and across the bottom (make sure you allow for the width of the lace when you measure for the length of the finished gown). Now simply attach tiny bows to the sides, all the way down. Sew the bows on so that they hold the very edges of the lace pieces down the sides. This simple caftan-type lingerie will look different if you cut the neckline to be a “v” neck in the front, or even in the front and back.
Making lingerie for your honeymoon isn’t really that hard. The fabric, lace and other notions you choose can help you create gorgeous lingerie pieces that cost little but make a lasting impression! If you don’t feel ready to sew panties to go under the gowns simple purchase ones that coordinate with the fabrics you’ve chosen. You’ll be surprised at your own talent!
