When I was younger I took riding lessons. I also took vaulting lessons – gymnastics on a horse. While it’s been years since I’ve stepped foot in a stirrup, these lessons left me with a lot of respect for both the horses and the athletes who ride them. Luckily, Prospect Park offers horseback riding and also occasionally offers up treats for those who like to ride or even watch riding.
Horses and Humans is a unique event where professional dancers and horses dance together to music. The Equus Projects and GallopNYC are joining up for this four-hour long event. It t starts at 11 AM on Saturday October 30th in Prospect Park, at The Nethermead and will run until 3, with professional dance performances, rehearsals and a chance to watch the students and teachers of GallopNYC give a performance of their own. Art and education are coming together in the Horses and Humans event. The Equus Projects is a company of professional dancers who choreograph dances with horses, while GallopNYC is a program that pairs disabled children with horses for equine therapy.
The event will be free and is a nice change of pace from all the Halloween activities that are taking place this weekend. The main performance of the day will be at 2:00, of the Dancing With Horses show “Celebration.” A live rehearsal of the show can also be observed at noon. So whether a love of dancing, riding, community events or all of the above are the main draw, this is an equine celebration worth stopping in for.
