If you’ve seen just one episode of “The Dog Whisperer” with Cesar Milan..than you already know what a pack leader should be.
Dogs are pack animals. It’s in their DNA. When other dogs are not present than you and your family become the pack for your dog. It is up to you to show your dog his place in the pack. Otherwise it just a matter of time before he begins to get unruly.
A lot of new dog owners think they can’t be pack leaders. YES you can.
Here’s a story about my young niece Ajanae…pack leader in training!
My four year old niece Ajanae… has a lot of cousins between the ages of 5 and 13. This four year old (I didn’t realize this at the time) would listen to me as I would play and correct behavior with my dog. She would listen when my dog Buddy and I would do our daily 5 min training sessions. One day she asked if she could feed Buddy and give her water.
“No problem”…I said and taught her how to measure her food and water.
Buddy knew I was her pack leader and was a very cooperative dog. Even though she was a lovable chocolate lab…she was about 70lbs. The other kids were scared of her and Buddy would not cooperate with them at all.
But four year old Ajanae would go up to Buddy and use the hand signals she had watched me do many times before. She would say the correct command that matched the hand signal. Buddy would without hesitation… obey.
You see this little four year old had without knowing it …become a pack leader. Her demeanor and her energy controlled a dog who outweighed her by 50lbs!
The point I’m trying to make is…everyone in your household can and should be a pack leader. It lets your dog know where she is in hierarchy of the pack.
Don’t worry that you may hurt your dogs feelings. It doesn’t work that way in the dog world. Plus treating a dog like a human being is never a good idea. That doesn’t mean you don’t love your dog. It means you can make your dogs life with your family a lot more fun for her if you learn to communicate on a level that her instincts and DNA understands.
