Have you ever wanted to make a website but did not know where to start? Here are some simple steps to help you build your very own website.
1. Domain name – First think about what name you want for your website (i.e. website.com, mywebsite.com, myfirstwebsite.net). In this example we will use ezebaytips.com. You can do and instant domain search for free and see what domains are available. Also consider the extension. Those websites with .com are more popular while domains with .net, .org, etc. have more unique names left.
2. Hosting account -Now how are you going to host your website on the internet? Basically you need to buying space on the internet. Like drive space. This is where you place all of your information for the website (I would suggest GoDaddy.com for your hosting. Just a preference of mine, so you can choose whatever you like.). If you would like to have your very own website with the domain that you want, then you have to purchase space. You could also get free space, but in these cases there are stipulations like ads that appear, and your domain name become more of a sub domain name to a higher domain. So if you wanted your domain name to be ezebaytips.com it would instead be something like freewebsite.com/ezebaytips. So for sake and purposes we are going to stay away from explaining free websites.
3. How to build your site – Now there are many ways to build your website. You can use your notepad program and write it all out, you can use Microsoft word and save the file as an html file, you can use Microsoft FrontPage and save it as an html file, you can use many other website building programs, or utilize blogging applications like WordPress to build your site.
a. Notepad, Word, FrontPage, and other instructions – When building any site you need a home page. A home page or index page is the first page that everyone comes to. The reason they call it an index page is that you name and save it as index.htm. So once you place this file on the internet, then it will display under the name ezebaytips.com. Now if you create any other files like tips.htm or contact.htm, then they would display as ezebaytips.com/tips.htm and ezebaytips.com/contact.htm. Now make sure that you create you links between each page you create. All of these programs except notepad will have tools to create links. All you have to do is highlight the link, use the link tool, and type in the next page that you want the link to direct the visitor to.
b. WordPress – Or if your hosting has a free blogging application like WordPress, then all you have to do is install the application, select a theme from many of pictures in a theme database ( which is the template for the website) , and install the theme. So your website is built. Just add the content. If you want the main page of the blogging application to start on the index page then give it index.htm name when you install it. Otherwise you will have to create your own index page place something like “[enter here]” or “Go to blog” link to direct you to your blog. Please note that these templates give you more than just a blog, but you can have a magazine template and so much more with many interactive add-ons such as free polls that make this one of the easiest ways to create a site.
4. Push it to the internet – If you created the site manually and have files to place on your hosting account, then you can go to your hosting site (i.e. godaddy.com), log in, and upload your files there on the opening domain folder. If you used WordPress then all you have to do is log into your WordPress log in page and update it through the admin which makes things actually easier.
