The old saying is “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”, but it may be coming true. New research suggest eating one apple or apple product (juice, sauce and etc) can help prevent many different health conditions. However, most of the research says the best way to take advantage of this is to eat one fresh apple a day.
Heart disease and stroke
Pectin is a fiber found in apples that will add up in the digestive tract and help reduce the risk of heart disease and strokes. This apple fiber reduces cholesterol levels, and blood pressure. Many people that eat apples on a regular basis report less weight, which is also a factor that reduces risk for heart related health problems.
The Pectin fiber that can help with heart conditions also helps with the prevention of growth of colon cancer cells. Butyrate is a chemo preventative chemical that helps decrease the growth of precancerous and tumor cells. This chemical is increased when Pectin is introduced to the body system. German researchers have done studies on human fecal matter to come to these conclusions. The Mayo Clinic did a study in 2001, which showed that quercetin (a nutrient found in apples) could help deter prostate cancer development.
Antioxidants found in apples can help with lung function. In fact, a study from the Netherlands indicates that eating at least five apples a week can reduce a smoker’s risk of COPD by half. Two other British studies have concluded that eating apples improved lung function.
Many health conditions can be linked to being overweight. Besides the conditions previously mentioned, diabetes and chronic pain are also associated with being overweight. Apples are a great source of fiber (more then some cereal), and fiber is a great way to aid digestion. When your digestion is healthy weight loss is much easier.
Alzheimer’s disease is one mental health condition that can be aided by drinking apple juice. In one study where the patients’ one-cup (8oz) worth of apple juice found that behavior and psychotic symptoms were reduced by 27%. It also did the biggest change in the patient’s anxiety, agitation, and delusion. This suggests that apple juice can be a big factor in increase a patient’s mood with Alzheimer’s.
For many years, we have told patients to eat their fruits. Little did many people understand just how helpful an apple could be. Eating an apple each day can keep many different types of doctors away.
