I had my first baby 3 years ago. I lost most of the baby weight in the first 6 months post partum, but there were about 10-15 lbs that would not come off! I did a lot of researching and gave it my best try. I finally lost the last bit of weight!
First. No skipping breakfast! Through trial and error, I realized that my weight loss was quickest if I focused most of my calories in the first half of the day. So that meant a big breakfast. I usually had an egg scramble–eggs, turkey kielbasa, some cheese, and broccoli or spinach.
Second. Water! water! water! 8 cups of water is the normal recommendation. In my researching, I saw a couple articles saying to drink your weight divided by 2 in ounces. So, the more you weight, the more water you should drink. Of course, you can drink more then the recommended. By the end of my weight loss journey, I was drinking close to 150 oz of water a day.
Third. Green tea! Green tea is full of antioxidants and can really help in boosting your metabolism. Try drinking 2 cups a day. And make sure it’s real green tea. Not the sweetened stuff already made. Careful though. There is some caffeine in green tea, though you can get decaf green tea if you don’t want the caffeine.
Fourth. Obviously, there should be some exercising to lose weight. Cardio will really help lost stored fat, while strength training will tone. I highly suggest yoga and pilates. Doing core exercises will really help pull in your stomach. Walking is a great exercise. If you don’t want to run, try walking for 30-60 minutes a day.
Some tips! Don’t starve yourself! It will only put your body into starvation mode and hang on to dear life the calories you do eat. It will severly slow down your metabolism. I wrote a more detailed article about low-calorie diets here. Also, set realistic goals. If you say “no more sweets at all!” Chances are, there will be a relapse and then you feel like you failed. Instead say “I will cut back on sweets”. Moderation!
Another thing. Don’t do the 3 meals only a day thing. Eat all day! Some snack ideas: peanuts, yogurt, granola, peanut butter and crackers, peanut butter and celery, dried fruit, fruit veggie smoothie*, broccoli**, eggs, peanut butter toast, grapes, tuna and crackers, salad***, cheese…
*For my smoothies, I blend together yogurt, some ice, spinach (lost of it!), carrots, strawberries, blueberries, and some flax seed. Super delicious with a little whipped cream on top!
**I heat some olive oil and toss in my frozen broccoli. I add chili powder, pepper, and some garlic powder. Sometimes, I will add some kielbasa.
***My salad’s consist of iceberg and romaine lettuce, sliced carrots, cheese and either shredded turkey lunch meat/canned chicken or kidney beans. I don’t even need to add any dressing!
Losing weight is a lifestyle change, not a diet! It is hard work, so don’t get to down on yourself if you have a hard time. I took me a long time to fully commit, but once I did, I felt so much better! Plus I lost some weight :)
