So many things happened on this week’s “How I Met Your Mother.” In “Natural History,” we meet Zoey’s husband, revisit Marshall’s dream of being an environmental lawyer, and hear Barney tell us a tale about the biggest prank he ever pulled at the Natural History museum. Of course, it’s not that simple. Except for flashbacks, most of which are from previous episodes, the entire episode takes place at the Natural History museum, at a formal gathering.
If you haven’t watched “How I Met Your Mother” in awhile or otherwise just don’t remember Zoey, she’s the protestor who’s making Ted’s life miserable. Why? Because the building he’s designing for GNB requires knocking down a building she’s trying to save, The Arcadian. Zoey’s husband is called “The Captain” and he turns out to be a close friend of the GNB president. The Captain pretty much says that he only considers Zoey’s protests to be projects that keep her busy, but Ted defends her. An architectural design in the building makes it where Zoey can hear Ted defending her from across the room, thus changing their relationship. This was actually the least interesting part of the episode.
Marshall reveals that he loves working for a corporate office, which upsets Lily. She wants the Marshall she fell in love with in college who’s going to be an environmental lawyer and she refuses to have Marshall any other way. Marshall tries to convince her that she’s not the same as when she was in college, but that doesn’t change anything, but Lily isn’t hearing it. Lily has a conversation with an extinct exhibit – College Marshall – who helps her realize that Marshall hasn’t changed in the ways that are most important. The episode ends with Future Ted revealing that Corporate Marshall will one day be extinct, too, but of course, that’s another story. Setting up a future story is what “How I Met Your Mother” does best – after all, the whole show is a long story about how Ted meets his future children’s mother.
Barney and Robin’s story in “Natural History” is the best. Barney reveals that when he was six years old, he pulled a great prank where he crashed a blue whale. It was legen – wait for it – dary. Robin doesn’t believe him and the two of them spend the night pulling off as many pranks as they can. They get caught by a security guard who tells them that they’re not as good as they think they are and mentions Barney’s story of crashing the blue whale. The security guard looks it up and proves that it was Barney, much to Robin’s disbelief – but that’s just the tip of the unbelievability. The person who signed Barney out of the security office when he was six was his father. Barney is upset because he had always known the man as his uncle – and he hadn’t seen him since that day because his mother got upset at the amount of damage Barney was allowed to do under his care. Barney makes Robin swear to not tell anybody. Barney and his brother started off the season not knowing who their fathers were, and it looks like by the end of the season, they’ll both know them.
Overall, this week’s “How I Met Your Mother” had a weak Ted story with a par for the course Lily and Marshall story. However, the Barney and Robin story makes the episode unforgettable and leaves us with the most exciting set up of the season – besides the wedding promised in the season premiere.
