It is no secret that new drivers who have just passed their driving test are not expert drivers. In fact, new drivers still require time to become proficient, experienced drivers, by learning more about how to anticipate hazards, deal with unexpected situations on the road and ways they can gain in confidence, which comes with practice and application. With that in mind, the Pass Plus scheme is aimed at helping new drivers in the UK to reach these goals.
Who Teaches the Pass Plus Scheme?
The Pass Plus Scheme is taught by Approved Driving Instructors (ADI) who are trained to help new drivers complete six learning modules (self-contained units of study). These training modules are intended to help new drivers become more proficient drivers after passing their driving test. The Pass Plus Scheme is an established training course across the UK. According to Directgov, the Pass Plus Scheme was designed by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) with the help of insurers and the driving instruction agency to help curb the incidence of road traffic accidents.
Do I Qualify to Apply for the Pass Plus Scheme in the UK?
Directgov states that the Pass Plus Scheme is open to all drivers in the UK, but the course is specifically aimed at attracting new drivers within their first year of passing their driving test, when they are in need of extra help and support on the roads.
What Kind of Training Does the Pass Plus Scheme Provide?
The Pass Plus Scheme is made up of six individual modules that deal with driving in a variety of different situations. These include driving in town, in a variety of weathers, driving on rural roads, driving at night, dual carriageways and also on motorways, which can be quite challenging for new drivers who have not had the opportunity to tackle some of the UK’s most frightening roads and road conditions.
New drivers who are interested in improving their driving skills by taking part in the Pass Plus Scheme should choose an ADI to train them. The ADI must be registered with the DSA as a Pass Plus Instructor, and have the ADI ‘green badge’.
