In order for you to enable mobile hot spot on the Droid, you will need to have root access. Root access for android phones is similar to jail breaking the iPhone. When you achieve root, you are granted Super User access that allows you to install third party software to your phone. Did you know that the Droid can be overclocked to 1.1ghz, making it faster than the Droid X, that comes with a 1ghz processor and mobile hot spot? Overclocking is only achieved with root access. You can also change the UI, or user interface once your droid has been rooted.
First, you will want to check to see which firmware you are running on your droid. This can be checked by going to Settings, About Phone, and scroll down to Android Version. If you are currently running version 1.5 this will be easy, otherwise you will need to downgrade from 2.2, 2.1 etc to 1.5 to gain root access.
For those of you running version 1.5 you can follow these steps.
1. Google droid root or download the file from www.multiupload.com/XYPZLK4K22, or www.4shared.com/file/168496608/8fa27888/droid-root.html.
2 .Copy the downloaded file to your Droid’s SD card and rename to update.zip.
3. Power off the Droid and power back own while holding the “X” key on the keyboard.
4. When you see the “!” symbol, press the volume up key along with the camera button.
5. Use the volume buttons to scroll down to where it says “Install Update.zip
6. Press the middle button on the directional pad to select and the install will begin to flash your Droid.
You can now run operating systems on your droid, I run Cyanogen mod on my Droid. Using the App Rom Manager that is found on Android Market, you can download new operating systems straight to the droid, along with choosing new features like overclocking and WiFi tethering, also known as mobile hot spot.
Once you have WiFi tethering installed, it will be found on your home screen and have a green WiFi signal icon. Click it and it will launch. Tap the screen again, and WiFi tethering will begin and will show you your current upload and download speeds. When you tap the screen again, mobile hot spot will disconnect.
Mobile hot spot uses your Droid’s unlimited data plan to connect to the internet so you wont be charged for connecting another device to the Droid because there is no way to tell the difference what device is using the internet. To your phone carrier, it looks like the phone is on the internet.
You wont have to upgrade your phone or be stuck with your current plan waiting to upgrade just to be able to use mobile hot spot once you root your Droid.
