These days children use computers for just about everything. Many schools even require your child to have access to the internet regularly so they can check homework assignments on their school website. Some schools will even give students their own laptops to use if they can’t view the school website at home! While the internet can provide your child a vast wealth of knowledge, it can also be a pretty scary place. In this article I’ll explain how to protect your child by learning how to block a website in Firefox.
How To Block A Website With FireFox: Why Block A Website?
Children and teens often don’t think before they act. This is made apparent by all the Youtube videos of children jumping off the roof onto trampolines into pools. The fact is that it’s much easier to monitor what your child is doing offline than it is online. Unfortunately, in this day and age, it’s just not realistic to think that you’ll be able to watch your child 24/7.
While most of the people you meet online are friendly, there are also many who aren’t. Even if your child knows better than to meet up with some stranger he met off a website, there are also cyberbullies to worry about. Turn on the news and you’ll hear case after case of children who have killed themselves because of how relentlessly they’ve been taunted. This is a growing problem, so why not help your child avoid some of that by learning how to block any bad website you see?
How To Block A Website With FireFox: Installing The Add-on
Firefox is a very popular web browser. Most everyone I know uses Firefox, and if you don’t, I highly recommend it. It’s safer for your computer than internet explorer is, and it also runs much faster. The thing I love most about Firefox though is how customizable it is.
When you use Firefox, you have the option to install add-ons. There are Firefox add-ons for just about everything, but the one I’m going to focus on is called Block Site. Block Site will allow you to block any website on Firefox that you think your child shouldn’t be viewing. If you’re wondering how to do this, it’s very easy. All you have to do is type to address into the extension and your child will no longer be able to view that website on Firefox.
If you don’t already know how to view add-ons with Firefox, I’ll explain how. First, you download the Firefox add-on. You can get the link in the source at the bottom of this article. After it’s done downloading, Firefox will restart. After that, go to Firefox tools, add-ons, click on Block Site, then edit. There you will be able to add any website that you wish to block.
How To Block A Website With FireFox: Why Use Block Site?
Block Site is a great FireFox add-on because you can edit it quickly, disable it when you don’t want it to be used, and it doesn’t place any annoying icons onto Firefox.
For an example, let’s say that your child needs to do homework on the computer. Perhaps they need look up how to solve a math problem, or how the pyramids were built. You can disable the sites that they commonly go to with this Firefox add-on. If they’re always goofing off on the Youtube website, you can block that site. If they’re more into playing games, block the addictiongames.com website. Now the block website will no longer load. Instead they’ll get an error telling them that this website is currently blocked.
After the child is done with their homework, with one simple click you can disable block site and the website that wouldn’t load before work perfectly. It’s that easy!
As I mentioned above, one of the main things I love about block site is how it doesn’t leave a large icon visible on your web browser. If your child goes online and their favorite website won’t load, then they notice a large icon in the corner of the screen that says “BLOCK SITE!” they’re just going to figure out how to disable it. While smarter kids may still try to figure out how to disable it, it’s not as easy, especially for younger children.
Another thing that’s great about Block Site for Firefox is how you’re able to add multiple website. It’s also possible to create a password so no one else can mess with it. It’s very easy learning how to do that too, all you do is click a button, enter your password, and you’re done.
How To Block A Website With FireFox: How to Disable Block Site
If you already have some knowledge on how to install add-ons to Firefox, it’s pretty easy to figure out how to disable them. Simply go to Firefox tools, then add-ons, then click disable, or edit, depending on how you can to disable it.
Disabling Block Site will save your current website settings. It will ask you to restart Firefox, then once the browser reopens, you’ll be able to visit the website as normal. Editing Block Site and manually deleting the website you have saved on the list is a more permanent solution if you decide you don’t want to use it on Firefox anymore.
Even though knowing how to block a website with Firefox can be useful, it doesn’t replace parenting. You should always talk to your child about safety, online and off. They should know that it’s okay to play, but they also have to get their work done. Children should also use common sense when online too. This will save them future embarrassment, and you future money. After all, broken bones due to a roof, trampoline, pool incident are expensive, no matter how many Youtube hits it gets.
