For necklaces, the conventional jewelry box has been usurped. The newest, stylish, convenient way to store your dangly jewelry is a necklace board. There is more than one way to make a necklace board. The method you choose depends on how much time, effort and money you want to spend. The concept is the same.
I will explain how to make the most detailed necklace board and then mention another, simpler way to make your own.
You will need a peg board, an assortment of attractive cabinet knobs or hooks, a frame, and a screwdriver.
First, purchase your frame. Pick one that is large enough to display all of your necklaces as they hang. Keep in mind that you can hang more than one necklace on each knob or hook, but you don’t want them to overlap too much. Empty, decorative frames are fairly cheap at craft stores, Target or Wal-Mart.
Next, you need a piece of pegboard cut to fit your frame. Most hardware stores will cut a piece of pegboard to the size you choose. The same hardware store will likely have hooks and cabinet knobs for you to choose from. These are what you will hang your jewelry on. Make sure that you have the necessary tools and hardware to install the knobs or hooks that you choose. Usually a simple screwdriver will be enough, but you may need some washers.
Finally, you have come to the fun part, putting together your necklace board. Frame the pegboard. This is as simple as framing any picture. Depending on the type of frame you chose, you may need to use your screwdriver to secure the pegboard inside the frame.
Now, decide how far apart you want your necklaces to hang. Stagger the rows of knobs or hooks slightly to make sure that the chains will not tangle. Also, you can add more knobs or hooks later if you leave some space.
Screw the knobs or hooks into the appropriate holes. Like installing knobs in cabinetry, insert the screw from the back side, and screw the knob onto the end of the screw that comes through to the front of the pegboard. Various hooks will be installed differently, check the package for specific instructions.
When you have attached all the knobs or hooks, you are ready to hang your necklace board. Look at the back of the frame to determine how best to hang it. Most frames have some kind of hanging apparatus on them. This may be a wire on the back or a small ledge to rest on the head of a nail. Hang your necklace board.
An even easier way to make a necklace board requires only a cork bulletin board and some colorful thumb tacks (not the kind that lay flush to the cork). As with the knobs or hooks, arrange the thumb tacks in staggered rows according to the number of necklaces. Hang the bulletin board and you are through. You are ready to display your jewelry!
