by bogbit

When you are learning how to catch trout it’s vitally important that you choose the proper trout bait. In this article I will outline a few of the best trout baits that can be used when river fishing, the place where most trout fishing occurs. Since this article is about the best trout bait to use while river fishing synthetic trout baits such as Powerbait will be excluded. These types of trout baits are more effective when used while still fishing in lakes and aren’t really even worth mentioning as river fishing baits for trout.

If you want to catch trout or learn how to catch more trout while river fishing one of the following baits will fit the bill perfectly. As a matter of fact if you have access to one or two of these trout baits on your next river fishing excursion there is little doubt that one of them will be the best trout bait on that particular day, and could become your “go to bait” for trout fishing in rivers.

  1. Small Spinners – Small in-line spinner such as Rooster Tails or Panther Martin’s are an excellent trout bait to use while river fishing and a bait that many anglers consider the best trout bait that there is. When using small spinners to catch trout it’s important to keep them small. Sizes ranging from 1/16 to a 1/8 ounce usually work best for trout fishing in rivers. Effective color choices vary with the fishing situations so having from three to six choices available is a great idea. Many times experimentation is the key to success when fishing with small spinners.
  2. Live Fishing Worms – Live fishing worms such as nightcrawlers and red worms have long been known as one of the best trout baits that can be used while river fishing. Are live worms the best trout bait? They very well could be and in my personal opinion are right up there. One of the keys to catching trout with fishing worms is to present said fishing worms in the most natural way possible. In other words you want your worm to look like it appears in nature to the trout that you are attempting to catch. In my twenty plus years of trout fishing in rivers there is little doubt that live fishing worms are among the best trout bait that can be found.
  3. Artificial Flies – Anyone who fishes for or is thinking of fishing for freshwater trout in a river fishing scenario is aware of the fact that artificial flies are a very popular and effective trout bait that many trout fishermen consider the best trout bait that there is. Whether you fish with artificial flies with traditional fly fishing gear or you use a casting or “fly fishing bubble” to fish with artificial flies, this trout baits effectiveness is well known and could easily be the best trout bait that a person can use when river fishing.

The bottom line is that if you are just learning how to catch a trout or are a trout fishing veteran, when you are river fishing the best trout bait can be found among the preceding choices.
