Growing up your mother probably always told you to eat and drink at the table, but you didn’t listen did you? Even those that obey their mother and eat at a table probably don’t obey the rule when it comes to drinking. We like to carry our drinks everywhere in the house, including the desk where we work on the computer. No matter how careful you are it is inevitable that at some point you will spill something on the keyboard.
Any time a liquid is spilled onto a keyboard it is likely to get underneath the keys of the keyboard. The first step to cleaning the keyboard is to get this water out from under the keyboard. Turn the keyboard upside down and try to shake out the excess liquids. After the drink has been poured out place the keyboard face down and let it sit for 24 hours to make sure to get all the liquid out.
If the drink that was spilled is water then pouring all the excess water and letting it dry will suffice. The keyboard only needs further cleaning if the drink is something sticky, like a soda. A sticky substance will obviously cause the keys to stick. To clean a sticky substance, begin by prying off the keys of the keyboard and get some cotton swabs. Dampen the cotton swabs with a little water and then wipe away the sticky substances.
This next tip is really for those of you that have a plain, ordinary keyboard. If your keyboard is a fancy gaming keyboard or something like that then skip this step because you will void the warranty and possibly ruin the keyboard. The solution is to put the keyboard in the dishwasher. That sounds odd but the dishwasher will clean the keyboard and in most cases will not damage the keyboard.
There is one last solution to remedy a sticky keyboard. Throw it away. Buy a new one. As I said in the last paragraph if you have plain, ordinary keyboard then this is a great solution because a regular keyboard is not going to set you back. That is also why it is okay to chance putting it in the dishwasher. If it does break in the dishwasher then there is no harm because it is not too difficult to replace it.
