Stir-frying is a delicious way to make a quick, healthy dinner. A stir-fry can include any combination of vegetables or meats, and is a great way to include a variety of different foods in your diet. To create a perfect stir-fry you will need:
Salt and pepper
Spices of your choosing
There are so many vegetables that taste great in a stir-fry. Squash (especially summer squash), peppers (bell or hot, in any color), onions, broccoli, green beans, carrots, potatoes, tomatoes, cauliflower, eggplant and just about any other vegetable you can think of.
Start your stir-fry by chopping your vegetables into bite sized pieces.
Pour a healthy amount of olive oil and add a good amount of garlic (don’t be afraid of flavor! Use a lot!) into a large pan and heat on medium to high heat. When the oil starts to sizzle, throw in your vegetables. Different vegetables have different cooking times, so you may want to stagger when you put your vegetables into the pan. Hard vegetables like carrots and potatoes take a good while to cook, while softer vegetables like tomatoes will only take a few seconds.
After your vegetables are in the pan, be sure to stir them every few minutes with a spatula. If the vegetables are severely sticking to the pan or starting to burn, turn the heat down a and add more olive oil.
In between stirs add liberal amounts of salt and pepper to the mix. You may also want to add different types of herbs and spices at this time. Cumin, paprika, rosemary, and basil are all great additions to a stir-fry. The only way you will know if you have the right combination and amount of spices is to taste your stir-fry! Take a quick bite – you’re allowed, you’re the cook!
Continue stirring until vegetables are tender. How will you know when your vegetables are ready? Stick a fork in them. If your fork can move easily through your broccoli then it’s ready. Et voila! Dinner is ready!
