You can find thousands, maybe millions of free wallpapers on the internet for your computer desktop. Sometimes, though you have a picture that you took yourself or an image that you created that you would like to use as a computer background and it just doesn’t fit right. Using a free program and a few simple modifications you can use any digital image for your desktop wallpaper.
Start by finding the resolution of your computer. You will need to know what size to make your picture so that it fits the screen properly. This can be done by minimizing all of your open applications until you reach you can see your desktop. Then right click on the screen and select “properties”. Click on “Settings” and note the current screen resolution of your computer. For example, a common size is 1064 x 768.Next, find any digital image that you would like to set as your desktop wallpaper and open it with Paint.net. If you don’t have this program, it can be downloaded for free. However, any graphics program such as Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop could be used for this task. They cost money though and a free program won’t have any problem performing a simple task such as creating desktop wallpaper.
Once your picture is open you will need to resize it so that it matches the screen resolution of your computer. In the menu bar at the top of the program, select “Image” and “Resize” from the menu that pops out. In the resize menu you will want to click on “absolute size” and “maintain ratio”. These two features will insure that your picture won’t become misshapen when it is resized.
When using the maintain ratio feature you may not be able to get the numbers to match your desired screen resolution. If the numbers are within about 10 pixels your wallpaper will be fine. If you are unable to keep it close, then create a blank document in Paint.net that is the exact size you desire and paste your image onto it in the center. This will create a frame around your picture, but at least it won’t be distorted in any way.
Now, you will need to type in the new size for your image. Use the resolution numbers that you found out earlier and type them in the corresponding boxes. If your size was 1064 x 768 you would type “1064” in the width box and “768” in the height box. After you have done this click “OK” at the bottom and your picture will be resized to your specifications. Remember to save your new file! Be sure to save it someplace that you will remember, because you will need to know its location to set it as your desktop wallpaper.
The final step is to set your newly created image as the wallpaper on your computer. Minimize everything on your screen until you reach the desktop. Right click on the desktop and select “Properties” and look for the “Desktop” tab along the top. Click “browse” and find the file that you just saved. Select your digital image and click “OK”.
After you have closed everything and return to your desktop you will see your newly resized image fitting perfectly on your computer screen.
