You can create as many categories as you want in ExpressionEngine and the categories will be shown on your site. In this guide, I am going to walk you through the steps of creating new categories in ExpressionEngine. I have not found a way to directly create new categories without going through the publish field, so if you have found a way, please feel free to comment at the end of this article and let us know.
Login as the admin of your site and go to your control panel. Once you are in the control panel, you will need to click the Publish tab to the left of your page. When the page reloads and opens the weblog section, you will need to click the Categories tab. In the category section, you will see the Edit Categories link, click that link and a box will open.
In the category box that opened, you will need to click the Create a New Category button. This button is located at the top of your box, on the right. You are now ready to create the new category. Fill in the fields in this box to create your new category and click the Submit button to create it. If you need help with the fields, please see the fields below. If you know how to do it, create your category and submit it and create more if you need to.
Category Name – Enter the name of your category in this field.
Category URL Title – Whatever you entered in the first field will also be entered in this field, so you do not have to worry about putting anything in this field.
Category Description – Enter a description of the category you are creating in this field.
Category Image URL – If you want to use an image to represent the category you are creating, you can enter the URL in this field.
Category Parent – If you want it to be a main category, leave this field as it is. If you want the category to be a sub-category, drop this box down and select the category you want it to be placed under.
Then click Submit when you are finished and your new category will be added to your site. You can create more if you want, or go on to something else.
