Some people might wonder why you would ever want to dye your hair with something as odd as koolaid, but there are many benefits to this method. For one, it doesn’t damage your hair. In fact, it actually makes it softer. This method also allows you to dye your hair bright colors quickly and easily. If you are looking to have lime green or hot pink hair, you will have to go out and spend tons of money on many different products to achieve it. By doing this, not only do you save time and money, but you also look fabulous while doing so, and who wouldn’t love that?
The first step in dying you hair with koolaid is to decide which color you would like to use. Koolaid comes in many different flavors, and each one of these are a different color. For example, if you are looking to dye your hair red, you can compare the shades of cherry, black cherry, and tropical punch to see which color you like more. You can also mix different flavors together to create an unique shade. It’s important to remember that the color that your hair will turn is the same color as the powder, no necessarily the drink. An example of this would be grape flavor. While the drink looks to be a dark purple, the powder is actually more of a grayish tint. Unless you want gray hair, it would be best to avoid using it.
Once you’ve selected the color that you would like, gather your supplies. You will need a bowl, spoon, conditioner, and several packets of sugar free koolaid. The number of packets you will need depends on the length of your hair. Short hair would only require one or two packets, where longer hair can require as many as five. You can also use Vaseline and gloves if you have them. This is optional, but it makes the process a lot less messy.
After you’ve gathered all your supplies, changed into something you do not mind getting dirty. Dying your hair can be a messy thing as all dye stains. Koolaid is no exception. If you do not have any clothes that you don’t mind getting messy, try draping an old towel over your shoulder to prevent staining.
Pour enough conditioner into your bowl to completely cover your hair. Depending on your hair length, this can be anywhere from 1/3 of a cup to a full cup. It’s important that there is enough conditioner to cover all parts of your hair, otherwise the dye it will come out looking uneven.
Once you’ve poured the right amount of conditioner into your bowl, open the packets of sugar free koolaid and pour it in. Take your spoon and mix the two together until the koolaid has dyed your conditioner to the right shade.
If you have Vaseline or gloves, now is the time to use them. Rub some Vaseline along your ears and scalp line. While koolaid dye doesn’t stain skin, if you are exposed to it for a long amount of time it can require some scrubbing to get it off. Vaseline helps prevent it from sticking to your head, while the gloves do the same for your hands. If you do not have Vaseline or gloves, that’s okay. Just be prepared to wash your hands and hair extra good while you are rinsing the dye out.
Take the conditioner and lather it into your hair. Make sure you get it on all parts that you want to dye. Some commonly missed areas are the back of the head, around the ears, and into the scalp. You may want to ask a friend to help with this step, or do it in front of a mirror so you do not miss anything.
After you cover your hair with the dye, you wait. Dying your hair this way takes longer than if you were using chemicals, but it is a lot less damaging to your hair and the colors come out much brighter. If you have light hair, you should only have to leave the dye in for 20 minutes before it works. If you have darker hair, you should wait closer to a hour. The great thing about this dye is that it does work on all color hair, but dying black hair will leave it more tinted compared to lighter hair.
Once you are done waiting, hop into the shower and rinse out the dye. Don’t worry, this will not stain your shower, but a lot of color will run from your hair. This is normal. You want to rinse your hair until the water dripping from it runs clear. After that, you are ready to get out.
The last step is to blow dry your hair, or wait for it to dry naturally. You may notice that your hair is a lot softer than usual. This is normal. Your hair acts this way because, even though you dyed it, you deep conditioned it while doing so, resulting in soft hair. Once it dries, you’re done! Now the only thing left to do is enjoy your new hair color!
