I’ve had cell phones through Verizon for quite awhile. I’ve always been happy with the service, and that’s why I stay with them. With other wireless carriers, my calls were frequently dropped, or I had no service, especially in remote areas. I haven’t had that problem with Verizon, until recently. I mentioned the problem to my friend Mike who has the same wireless carrier. He recommended that I update the roaming capability. I did. The actual procedure took about a minute- and I’m happy once again with my Verizon service. If your cell phone isn’t too old, you too can easily update the roaming capabilities on your Verizon wireless phone without paying a dime! Older phones may not have this feature, according to Information Services & Technology at the renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Note: Be sure to follow the prompts Verizon gives you as they may vary.
Check to make sure you have plenty of battery power on your Verizon phone. Even though the procedure is short, you don’t want your phone to cut out while you’re doing it.
Turn your Verizon wireless phone on and wait until you have service. If you’re in a remote area where there is a service outage, you’ll need to move to a reachable location.
Key in *228 on your cell phone keypad. Then press “Send”. According to MIT, the call is free so you don’t have to worry about any charges. You’ll see “Programming in progress…” on the screen.
You’ll hear a message that welcomes you to Verizon Wireless programming. You’ll be given the option of hearing the prompts in Spanish. You’ll then be given a choice of two options. Choose the option to update your roaming capabilities – currently it’s number 2.
You’ll see “Programming in progress…” on the screen. You’ll also hear music. When the update is complete, a voice will say “Your roaming capabilities have been updated successfully. Thank you for calling Verizon Wireless. Good bye.” You will then hear three beeps. A message on the screen will prompt you to press the “OK” button, and you’re finished.
To keep your Verizon cell phone updated and working its best, perform this procedure once a month.
