If you are like me, you don’t have access to a car to get a job off-campus. This is the main problem that most students have when trying to find a job. Sure, there are plenty of jobs at the local mall, grocery store, or bank. But if you don’t have transportation to get you there, then that doesn’t do you any good. The only option you have then is to get a job on campus. Jobs on campus are pretty competitive since there are a bunch of students applying for a limited amount of jobs, but it is definitely possible to get one.
It is much easier to get a job on campus when you have federal work study. This is part of a financial aid package provided by the government. They give you an amount that you are allowed to earn through a work study job in a given academic year. You cannot go over this amount, so there is limited money to make. The higher amount the government (or rather your university) allows you to make, the more hours you will get in a week. Honestly, no matter what amount you get, it is better than nothing. Work study jobs are usually posted online or you can attend a job fair designed for those who have work study. Most universities have this option.
However, federal work study funds are extremely limited and are not given to everyone. If you don’t have work study, then you can still get a job on campus. It is just a little more difficult. During the first week of school, there is usually a job fair that will have many of the jobs that are available that are not work study. This job fair is different than the one most universities give for those who have work study. Make every effort to go to this job fair. Jobs on campus usually fill up very quickly, so it is important that you apply within the first week of school.
If you can’t attend the job fair, then you should look on your university’s website to see what jobs were presented at the job fair. They usually have a list of the departments that were there. Call or visit these departments and ask about their employment opportunities. You could even do this before the date of the job fair. This will show that you are really taking initiative to find a job. As I said, campus jobs go pretty quickly. If you can send in your application and resume before others do at the job fair, then you will be ahead of the game.
If your university does not have a job fair, then they should have job postings somewhere on their website. All universities have some way to advertise their job positions, so don’t think that they simply don’t exist. If your university posts their job opportunities online, then you should start looking at them over the summer. Some departments will post their jobs early so that they can find someone to fill those positions before school starts.
Unfortunately, most people need to both go to school and work to get by. This can be hard to manage and the stress of finding a job can be even worse. Do your searching early!
