If you live in an older home or if you have ever wondered if you home might be haunted, you can find out the history of your home. It does take some work but you can uncover facts that might help confirm thoughts you have had about the history of the home and the area that it is located in. There are several ways that you can go about finding out the history of your home, some free, some at a cost.
How to find out the history of your home:
Public Records- Some information on your home will be on file in the local courthouse. You can research previous owners of the home by looking there. Finding out who owned the home previously can help you a great deal with your search. Once you know who owned the house before you, you will be able to find out more information on what happened to those owners and things that happened in the house. The first step should always be to find out who lived in the house prior to you.
Interviews- If at all possible, find senior residents that have lived in the area and interview them. Ask them if they know of any legends surrounding the town or even your home. Most towns have some type of legends that could help lead you in the right direction. For instance, if there is a legend in the town about any ghosts, there may possibly be a connection to your home. It can also help in your search as far as when you search through the internet because you will have better search terms to look under.
Newspapers- You may be able to tell some information on the history of the house by looking in old newspapers. That can be done at the local library or perhaps the newspaper itself. Many libraries and newspapers archive old editions so that history is preserved. The reason that you may be able to find information out about the house is that news stories are usually centered around a particular location. This could be a very long and arduous task though. You don’t really know what you are looking for and may not come across anything this way, however, there is a possibility that you could come across some very interesting information.
Internet- The internet is a great place to find information on just about anything you want, that includes your house and your local area and its history. Most older homes have some type of interesting history. It could be that your home was used as a stop for Civil War soldiers but don’t stop your train of thought there. There was also a revolutionary war and it’s history goes much deeper than what most people learn in their history books in school. Looking for old ghost stories of your area will usually be fairly easy when you search on the internet because people love to tell their ghost stories there.
The House- We all know that if the walls of any home could speak, they would have a million interesting tales to tell. You probably won’t ever find out every detail of the people that lived in the home prior to your living there, but you may be able to find some clues inside the very walls of the home. Previous owners may well have left clues behind, either knowingly or unknowingly. Look for clues around the home. If there is an attic or a basement, look there for clues. You might be surprised what you find. Most people don’t spend a lot of time looking around their attic for information on their home. The same goes for the basement. People are usually very thorough when they move from a home, but if your house is more than a hundred years old, there is a good chance that somewhere in the house lies some clues to the past. Perhaps there are scratching on the walls or perhaps there is an old diary buried in a crack or crevice of the attic. You would be surprised what you can find in those nooks and crannies in the attic and basement.
Previous Residents- If you can find contact information on the last owners of the house, you may be able to contact them to find out if they know any history on the house or found anything in the house that might give you a clue to its past. Although it isn’t likely you will find the original owners of the home if it is an extremely old house, you may be able to find some clues in the things that the people who lived there before knows about. That information may have been inadvertently overlooked when you were purchasing the home. The only way to find out is to try to contact the people who lived there prior to you and ask them.
Before the House was Built- Find out the history of the land before the house was built. This can be a telltale sign of the area. This is especially important if you are looking for a ghost story. The land that a home was built on could have been a battleground or possibly where some dreadful thing happened. It could even be the site of an old burial ground. Real estate agents wouldn’t be too excited to tell potential homeowners about this possibility because it may lose them a sale, but it is possible, so check every possibility.
Searching for prior information about your home can be a very detailed task. You can hire someone to do the work for you if you don’t have time but you have the money. Knowing the full history of your home could give you a revealing look and new perspective on the home itself. Every home has a history if someone has lived there before you. It can also give you a lot of things to talk about at the next party you go to. If you want to feel truly connected to your home, find out it’s history.
